About The Position

Madison Community Scholars (MCS) offers paid, off-campus opportunities that provide real-world experience and create a positive social impact. Students are matched with local, non-profit, school, or government agencies based on their academic interests, experience, passions, and availability. This program allows students to gain valuable experience while supporting community organizations. The Community Engagement & Volunteer Center (CEVC) also provides ongoing workshops, programs, and one-on-one mentorship to support professional and personal growth.

Requirements

  • Be a current JMU student (must be enrolled in at least 6 credits)
  • Eligible for Federal Work Study via the ’26 – ’27 financial aid package
  • Must be a current full-time JMU student and eligible for Federal Work Study
  • Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).

Nice To Haves

  • We prioritize students with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Engaging in outdoor work (i.e. planting, pruning, mulching, weeding, harvesting, etc.)
  • Supporting new sustainability initiatives (i.e. passive solar greenhouse, carbon farming, renewable energy, etc.)
  • Managing trails (i.e. invasive plant removal, weed eating, weatherization, etc.)
  • Organizing tools and storage (i.e. shed management, labeling, inventory, etc.)
  • Providing outdoor learning spaces for children and other community members
  • Assisting with associated events (sustainability summits, farmer’s markets, CSAs, etc.)
  • Regularly managing timesheets (time is captured through an online platform – TimeClock Plus – and submitted twice a month)
  • Consistently participating in on-campus, in-person workshops
  • Attending one semesterly one-on-one meeting with your CEVC MCS advisor
  • Participating in one semesterly MCS Community Day
  • Engaging in two semesterly campus or community educational programs
  • Committing to work consistently scheduled 6 or more hours per week for the full academic year (excluding academic breaks)
