About The Position

Madison Community Scholars (MCS) offers paid, off-campus opportunities that build resumes, cater to student passions, and contribute positively to the community. Students work consistently (6-8 hours/week) with a local, off-campus community organization throughout the school year, gaining real-world experience while enhancing the capacity of local organizations. The Community Engagement & Volunteer Center (CEVC) provides ongoing workshops, programs, and one-on-one mentorship to support professional and personal growth. Opportunities are available in categories such as Education & Childcare Support, Environment & Sustainability Support, Marketing & Social Media Support, and Operations & Event Support. Applicants are matched with organizations based on academic interests, experience, passions, and availability.

Requirements

  • Be a current JMU student (must be enrolled in at least 6 credits)
  • Eligible for Federal Work Study via the ’26 – ’27 financial aid package
  • Must be a current full-time JMU student and eligible for Federal Work Study
  • Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate)

Nice To Haves

  • Prioritize students with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Appreciate a really good aesthetic
  • Consider yourself creative and design is a passion point
  • Comfortable creating marketing collateral (i.e., social media posts, pamphlets, posters)

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring and management of social media, including the development of content and timely responses to comments
  • Development of marketing collateral (for example, social media posts, pamphlets, posters, website assets)
  • Audit of existing promotional materials to ensure consistency in look, feel, and voice
  • Partnership with organization stakeholders to drive awareness around events, initiatives, and offerings
  • Staffing a table at events to communicate services and opportunities of your organization
  • Regularly managing timesheets through an online platform (TimeClock Plus)
  • Consistently participating in on-campus, in-person workshops
  • Attending one semesterly one-on-one meeting with your CEVC MCS advisor
  • Participating in one semesterly MCS Community Day
  • Engaging in two semesterly campus or community educational programs
  • Committing to work consistently scheduled 6 or more hours per week for the full academic year (excluding academic breaks)
