About The Position

The Madison Community Scholars (MCS) program offers paid, off-campus opportunities for current full-time JMU students eligible for Federal Work Study. These positions provide real-world experience and contribute positively to the community. Students are matched with local non-profit, school, or government agencies based on their academic interests, experience, passions, and availability. The Community Engagement & Volunteer Center (CEVC) supports students through ongoing workshops, programs, and one-on-one mentorship. Opportunities are available in categories such as Education & Childcare Support, Environment & Sustainability Support, Marketing & Social Media Support, and Operations & Event Support. The program requires a commitment of 6-8 hours per week throughout the school year.

Requirements

  • Be a current JMU student (must be enrolled in at least 6 credits)
  • Eligible for Federal Work Study via the ’26 – ’27 financial aid package
  • Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).

Responsibilities

  • Administrative assistance (i.e. monitoring email inboxes, answering phone calls, managing reservation requests and event registration forms, etc.)
  • Schedule and resource coordination (i.e. following-up on appointments, securing appropriate resources for events, identifying local places where you can post flyers etc.)
  • Management of various rosters and contact lists to ensure accurate data entry
  • Provide logistical support for events and workshops that are hosted by the organization
  • Assist with scheduling and calendar management to ensure projects and programs are completed
  • Evaluate programming and provide feedback to assist with future logistical details to help support the organization
  • Representing your organization at an event (for example, setting up and managing a booth at a local fair)
  • Regularly managing timesheets (time is captured through an online platform – TimeClock Plus – and submitted twice a month)
  • Consistently participating in on-campus, in-person workshops
  • Attending one semesterly one-on-one meeting with your CEVC MCS advisor
  • Participating in one semesterly MCS Community Day
  • Engaging in two semesterly campus or community educational programs
  • Committing to work consistently scheduled 6 or more hours per week for the full academic year (excluding academic breaks)
