Machinist Trainee - 2nd and 3rd Shifts - Supplemental
About The Position
Caterpillar’s Large Power Systems Division designs and manufactures large diesel and natural gas engines, engine components, and powertrains. As a Machinist Trainee at Caterpillar Pontiac, you may train in grinding, bead blasting, extrude honing, or Robodrill operations. The work includes setting up, operating, and monitoring equipment to process metal components and produce precise, high-quality parts. Positions begin as supplemental employment, with 36 or more hours per week, no holiday pay, and limited benefits. Training takes place during first-shift hours, Monday through Friday. Relocation assistance is not available. Any offer is conditional on successfully completing a drug screen.
Requirements
- At least 6 months of experience in manufacturing, engine maintenance, or machining.
- Ability to follow written instructions, such as schematics, standard work, or blueprints.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Strong commitment to safety and teamwork.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate a variety of CNC machines to produce high-precision parts.
- Read blueprints and drawings to determine product dimensions and tolerances.
- Apply intermediate math skills, including fractions, geometry, addition, and subtraction.
- Learn to determine feed and speeds and select tooling.
- Depending on training assignment, set up, operate, and adjust grinders for surface and cylindrical grinding or crankshaft bearing grinding.
- Depending on training assignment, operate a bead-blasting machine to smooth burrs from parts.
- Depending on training assignment, operate an extrude-hone machine using parts and clay to remove metal shavings and create a smooth, clean finish.
- Depending on training assignment, operate and monitor a Robodrill for drilling, tapping, and milling; adjust tool offsets and inspect finished parts for accuracy and quality.
