About The Position

The Information Intelligence team develops artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, and generative AI technologies used across Apple products and cloud services. The team’s universal search engine supports features in Siri, Spotlight, Safari, Messages, and Lookup.

In this role, you will conduct large-scale machine learning and deep learning research and development to improve open-domain question answering using structured knowledge graph data and unstructured web data, as well as summarization. You will develop machine learning and large language models (LLMs) that understand user queries, retrieve and rank relevant documents from multiple sources, and synthesize information into direct answers. You will also research and develop LLMs for summarizing personal data such as emails, messages, and notifications.

You will work with researchers and data scientists to develop, fine-tune, and evaluate domain-specific LLMs for tasks and applications in Apple AI-powered products, and conduct applied research to bring generative AI advances into production-ready technologies. As a member of the group, you will help shape upcoming Apple products. The team seeks motivated machine learning engineers and researchers with strong machine learning and deep learning fundamentals and hands-on experience fine-tuning deep learning models and LLMs.

Requirements

• At least 10 years of work experience in machine learning, deep learning, or a related field.
• Experience modeling user behavior, including personalization, online learning, and recommendation systems.
• Experience developing machine learning or LLM models for NLP tasks and RAG applications, including prompt engineering, training data collection and generation, model fine-tuning, and model evaluation.
• Experience with Python and at least one deep learning framework such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or JAX.
• Strong machine learning and deep learning fundamentals.
• Hands-on experience fine-tuning deep learning models and large language models.

Nice To Haves

• PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• At least 2 years of experience with state-of-the-art LLM fine-tuning techniques in one or more areas: supervised fine-tuning with rejection sampling; preference-based fine-tuning such as RLHF, reward models, DPO, PPO, or GRPO; parameter-efficient fine-tuning such as LoRA; hallucination reduction and factual accuracy improvements; or designing and implementing safety guardrails.
• At least 10 years of experience leading complex cross-functional projects and influencing research direction.
• At least 10 years of experience with large-scale model training, optimization, and deployment.
• Consistent track record of researching, inventing, and/or shipping advanced machine learning models.
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with cross-functional teams.
