About The Position

The Information Intelligence team develops artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing technologies that power search across Apple products, including Siri, Spotlight, Safari, Messages, and Lookup. The team also develops generative AI technologies based on large language models for Apple devices and cloud services.

In this role, you will conduct large-scale machine learning and deep learning research and development focused on open-domain question answering and summarization. You will develop machine learning and large language models to understand user queries, retrieve and rank relevant documents from multiple sources, and synthesize information into direct answers. You will also research and develop models to summarize personal data such as emails, messages, and notifications. Working with researchers and data scientists, you will develop, fine-tune, and evaluate domain-specific LLMs, and apply generative AI research to production-ready technologies. The role offers the opportunity to help shape upcoming Apple products.

Requirements

• Experience modeling user behavior, including personalization, online learning, and recommendation systems.
• Experience developing machine learning or LLM models for NLP tasks and RAG applications, including prompt engineering, training data collection and generation, model fine-tuning, and model evaluation.
• Experience with Python and at least one deep learning framework such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or JAX.

Nice To Haves

• PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• At least 2 years of experience with state-of-the-art LLM fine-tuning techniques in one or more areas: supervised fine-tuning (SFT) with rejection sampling; preference-based fine-tuning such as RLHF, reward models, DPO, PPO, or GRPO; parameter-efficient fine-tuning such as LoRA; hallucination reduction and factual accuracy improvements; or safety guardrail design and implementation.
• Consistent track record of researching, inventing, and/or shipping advanced machine learning models.
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with cross-functional teams.
