About The Position

The Information Intelligence team develops artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing technologies for Apple products and services, including Siri, Spotlight, Safari, Messages, and Lookup. The team builds universal search capabilities and generative AI technologies powered by large language models (LLMs). This role focuses on large-scale machine learning and deep learning research and development for open-domain question answering, summarization, search, and other AI applications.

The engineer will develop sophisticated machine learning models and LLMs to understand user queries, retrieve and rank relevant documents from multiple sources, and synthesize information into direct answers. The role also includes research on summarizing personal data such as emails, messages, and notifications, and collaborating with researchers and data scientists to develop, fine-tune, and evaluate domain-specific LLMs. Applied research will be transferred into production-ready technologies for Apple’s AI-powered products.

Requirements

• Experience modeling user behavior, including personalization, online learning, and recommendation systems.
• Experience developing machine learning or LLM models for NLP tasks and retrieval-augmented generation applications, including prompt engineering, training data collection and generation, model fine-tuning, and model evaluation.
• Experience with Python and at least one deep learning framework such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or JAX.
• PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• At least 2 years of experience with state-of-the-art LLM fine-tuning techniques in one or more of the following areas: supervised fine-tuning with rejection sampling; preference-based techniques such as RLHF, reward models, DPO, PPO, or GRPO; parameter-efficient fine-tuning such as LoRA; hallucination reduction and factual accuracy improvements; or designing and implementing safety guardrails.
• A consistent track record of researching, inventing, and/or shipping advanced machine learning models.
• Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities

• Research and develop state-of-the-art deep learning models and LLMs for tasks and applications in Apple’s AI-powered products.
• Develop, fine-tune, and evaluate domain-specific LLMs for NLP tasks including summarization, question answering, search relevance and ranking, entity linking, and query understanding.
• Conduct applied research to transfer generative AI research into production-ready technologies.
• Understand product requirements and translate them into modeling and engineering tasks.
• Stay current with advancements and research in deep learning and LLMs.
