The Login Clerk position will be responsible for all sample login activities at the laboratory. The priority for this position will be to receive and organize samples, verify client information, enter the pertinent information into the laboratory data systems and prepare samples for sublet to the testing laboratory(s). The Laboratory Analyst duties involve performing a variety of analysis in the Wastewater department, including BOD, COD, Ammonia, Colour and TSS. Using approved methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality and adherence to safe laboratory practices by working in accordance with the ALS Health and Safety Program.

  • Capable of being back up for the operational functions of the Manager
  • Completion of diploma or degree in chemistry or related field
  • Demonstrated high level of performance in laboratory role with respect to performing all analytical processes, instrumentation monitoring and maintenance, and leadership skills
  • Able to lift 50lbs and carry for short distances
  • Manual dexterity to perform intricate and/or repetitive tasks
  • Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE) such as dust masks, gloves etc., when required
  • Ability to stand for a full shift
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Ability to sit at a desk and do general office work, which includes periodic sedentary responsibilities
  • You may be exposed to unpleasant fumes
  • Must be a Citizen or Permanent Resident of the country you are applying for, or either hold or be able to obtain, a valid working visa

Responsibilities

  • Receive sample submissions as they arrive at the laboratory/service center
  • Open and layout samples and paperwork to confirm all required samples have been received
  • Enter all pertinent information into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), including logging of the requested analyses
  • Determine when client sample processing instructions are missing, incomplete or ambiguous and notify the applicable ALS Project Manager ASAP
  • Fill out bench sheets completely and accurately
  • Organize workload to meet Turn Around times and hold times
  • Ability to work closely with the supervisor/manager and other lab staff to ensure the smooth delivery of our services to clients
  • Shipping and receiving duties
  • Identify and resolve internal and external problems when they arise
  • Adhere to strict QA/QC requirements
  • Operation of instrumentation, following documented specific methods and/or procedures
  • Responsibility for data processing (i.e. calculations, data review, data entry, archival, etc.)
  • Perform instrument/equipment calibration, maintenance, and repair
  • Sample preparation
  • Prepare all required reagents, standards, reference materials, etc., including sample dilutions
  • Carry out all required work scheduling and planning activities
  • Carry out all required record-keeping & documentation
  • Deliver accurate results to our clients in a timely manner to meet Turn Around Times (TAT’s), as well as assist others in meeting TAT goals
  • Technical decision making for non-routine, complex analyses or matrices
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • Assist in the investigations of any failed PT’s
  • Data review and approval
  • Mentorship and training resource for any lab assitant or analyst
  • Assist with method development and SOP review
  • Active participation in the COR safety program
  • Actively participate in team meetings, bring forward ideas for process improvements, cost saving ideas, and service improvements
  • Investigation of failed rechecks
  • Communicate with clients and project managers regarding sample reception and reporting
  • Assist in other sections of the lab as required
  • Communicate with other labs regarding sample reception, shipping, analysis and reporting
  • Use correct methods in accordance with the established procedures and schedules while ensuring analytical quality
  • Observe established safety regulations and comply with all ALS health and safety policies and procedures
  • Participate in monitoring and maintaining inventory of supplies, chemicals, and consumables, etc.
  • Participate in regular housekeeping and organization activities
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor/Manager
