About The Position

Benchmark, a division of National Underground Group, provides damage-prevention and private utility-locating services to utility companies, municipalities, homeowners, and contractors. The company locates underground facilities through 811-call-center contracts and private services, helping prevent or reduce damage during excavation. It prioritizes safe, high-quality work and customer service, and serves several states and Washington, D.C.

The Locate Technician uses technical equipment to identify and mark underground utilities, communicates with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners, and interprets work orders, maps, and blueprints. The role involves traveling to locate sites, working outdoors and independently, and removing and replacing manhole lids. On-call work may require performing duties before or after normal business hours.

Requirements

• Willingness to learn; instructor-led training is required to receive locator certification.
• Ability to drive local roads, work outdoors, and operate independently.
• Ability to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to access restricted or controlled areas, such as federal installations.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Strong work ethic.
• Ability to use a computer to complete documentation and receive and send email.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
• Ability to walk varied terrain, including grass, ditches, wooded areas, and gravel, in construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas in all types of weather.
• Ability to walk up to five miles in one day, several times a week.

Responsibilities

• Use mechanical and technical equipment to locate underground telephone, electrical, cable television, gas, fiber-optic, water, and sewer facilities.
• Communicate daily with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners about locate issues.
• Interpret job-order tickets and respond appropriately to support customer satisfaction.
• Read maps and blueprints to locate utilities accurately.
• Determine efficient routes to locate sites in rural and urban areas.
• Remove and replace manhole lids.
