Locate Technician - Birmingham, AL
About The Position
Benchmark, a division of National Underground Group, provides damage-prevention solutions to utility companies and municipalities, as well as private utility-locating services to homeowners and contractors. The company uses 811-call-center contracts to locate and mark underground gas, water, sewer, electric, telephone, cable, and fiber facilities, helping prevent damage during excavation. Safety, high-quality work, and customer service are priorities. This role serves the Birmingham, Alabama area and may involve on-call work outside normal business hours. The Locate Technician uses mechanical and technical equipment, maps, and blueprints to locate underground utilities; communicates with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners; interprets job-order tickets; plans efficient routes; and removes and replaces manhole lids. The position involves independent outdoor work and travel across varied terrain and weather conditions. Instructor-led training is required to obtain locator certification.
Requirements
- Willingness to learn; instructor-led training is required to obtain locator certification.
- Ability to drive local roads, work outdoors, and operate independently.
- Ability to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to access restricted or controlled areas, such as federal installations.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Strong work ethic.
- Ability to use a computer to complete documentation and send and receive email.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to walk varied terrain, including grass, ditches, wooded areas, and gravel, in construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas in all weather conditions; may require walking up to five miles in one day several times a week.
Responsibilities
- Use mechanical and technical equipment to accurately locate underground telephone, electrical, cable television, gas, fiber-optic, water, and sewer facilities.
- Communicate daily with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners about locate issues.
- Interpret job-order tickets and respond appropriately to support customer satisfaction.
- Read maps and blueprints to locate utilities accurately.
- Determine efficient routes to locates in rural and urban areas.
- Remove and replace manhole lids.
