About The Position

Benchmark, a division of National Underground Group, provides damage-prevention solutions to utility companies and municipalities, as well as private utility-locating services for homeowners and contractors. The company uses 811-call-center contracts to locate and mark underground gas, water, sewer, electric, telephone, cable, and fiber facilities before excavation, with safety and customer service as priorities.

The Locate Technician uses mechanical and technical equipment to identify underground facilities, communicates with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners, interprets locate tickets, reads maps and blueprints, and plans efficient routes to locate sites in rural and urban areas. The role also involves removing and replacing manhole lids. Technicians may need to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call.

Requirements

• Willingness to learn; instructor-led training is required to receive locator certification.
• Ability to drive local roads, work outdoors, and operate independently.
• Ability to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to access restricted or controlled areas, such as federal installations.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Strong work ethic.
• Ability to use a computer to complete documentation and send and receive email.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
• Ability to walk across varied terrain, including grass, ditches, wooded areas, and gravel, in construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas in varied weather conditions.
• Ability to walk up to five miles in one day, several times a week.

Responsibilities

• Use mechanical and technical equipment to accurately locate underground telephone, electrical, cable television, gas, fiber optic, water, and sewer facilities.
• Communicate daily with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners about locate issues.
• Interpret job order tickets and respond appropriately to support customer satisfaction.
• Read maps and blueprints to locate utilities accurately.
• Determine efficient routes to locate sites in rural and urban areas.
• Remove and replace manhole lids.
