Locate Technician - Winchester, VA
About The Position
Benchmark, a division of National Underground Group, provides damage-prevention solutions to utility companies and municipalities, as well as private utility-locating services for homeowners and contractors. The Locate Technician helps prevent damage to underground utilities during excavation by locating and marking utility lines, including gas, water, sewer, electric, telephone, cable, and fiber. The role involves using technical equipment, interpreting work orders and maps, communicating with customers and excavation crews, and working in varied outdoor environments. Locator certification requires instructor-led training.
Requirements
- Willingness to learn; instructor-led training is required to receive locator certification.
- Ability to drive local roads, work outdoors, and operate independently.
- Ability to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to access restricted or controlled areas, such as federal installations.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Strong work ethic.
- Ability to use a computer to complete documentation and receive and send email.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to walk on varied terrain, including grass, ditches, wooded areas, and gravel, in construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas under varied weather conditions.
- May need to walk up to five miles in one day, several times a week.
Responsibilities
- Use mechanical and technical equipment to accurately locate underground utilities, including telephone, electric, cable television, gas, fiber optic, water, and sewer lines.
- Communicate daily with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners about locate issues.
- Interpret job order tickets and respond appropriately to support customer satisfaction.
- Read maps and blueprints to locate utilities accurately.
- Determine efficient routes to locate assignments in rural and urban areas.
- Remove and replace manhole lids.
