About The Position

Benchmark, a division of National Underground Group, provides damage-prevention solutions to utility companies and municipalities, as well as private utility-locating services to homeowners and contractors. The company serves Virginia, D.C., Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and Delaware. Locate Technicians help prevent damage to underground utilities by locating and marking facilities before excavation. The role involves daily communication with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners, and may require performing locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call. The stated pay range is $20–$26 per hour, depending on experience. Instructor-led training is required to receive locator certification.

Requirements

• Willingness to learn and complete required instructor-led training for locator certification.
• Ability to drive local roads, work outdoors, and operate independently.
• Ability to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call.
• Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to access restricted or controlled areas, such as federal installations.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Strong work ethic.
• Ability to use a computer to complete documentation and receive and send email.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
• Ability to walk varied terrain in and around construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas in all types of weather; may need to walk up to five miles in a day several times a week.

Responsibilities

• Use mechanical and technical equipment to locate underground telephone, electrical, cable television, gas, fiber optic, water, and sewer facilities accurately.
• Communicate with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners about locate issues.
• Interpret job order tickets and respond appropriately to support customer satisfaction.
• Read maps and blueprints to locate utilities accurately.
• Determine efficient routes to locate sites in rural and urban areas.
• Remove and replace manhole lids.
