Locate Technician - Fluvanna, VA
About The Position
Benchmark, a division of National Underground Group, provides damage prevention services to utility companies, municipalities, homeowners, and contractors. The company locates and marks underground gas, water, sewer, electric, telephone, cable, and fiber facilities to reduce or prevent damage during excavation. This position serves the Fluvanna, Virginia area and contributes to Benchmark’s focus on safety, quality work, and customer service. The Locate Technician uses technical equipment, maps, and job-order information to locate underground utilities. The role involves daily communication with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners; planning routes to locate sites in rural and urban areas; and removing and replacing manhole lids. Work may take place outdoors in varied terrain and weather, and locate duties may be required before or after normal business hours while on call. Instructor-led training is required to obtain locator certification.
Requirements
- Willingness to learn; instructor-led training is required to receive locator certification.
- Ability to drive local roads, work outdoors, and operate independently.
- Ability to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to access restricted or controlled areas, such as federal installations.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Strong work ethic.
- Ability to use a computer to complete documentation and receive and send email.
- Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
- Ability to walk varied terrain, including grass, ditches, wooded areas, and gravel, in construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas in all types of weather.
- Ability to walk up to five miles in one day, several times a week.
Responsibilities
- Use mechanical and technical equipment to accurately locate underground telephone, electrical, cable television, gas, fiber optic, water, and sewer facilities.
- Communicate and interact daily with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners to discuss locate issues.
- Interpret job-order tickets and respond appropriately to ensure customer satisfaction.
- Read maps and blueprints to ensure accurate utility locations.
- Determine efficient routes to locate sites in rural and urban areas.
- Remove and replace manhole lids.
