About The Position

Benchmark, a division of National Underground Group, provides damage prevention solutions to utility companies and municipalities, as well as private utility-locating services to homeowners and contractors. The Locate Technician helps prevent damage to underground utilities during excavation by locating and marking facilities such as gas, water, sewer, electric, telephone, cable, and fiber lines. The role serves Benchmark clients in the Harrisonburg, Virginia area and involves working independently outdoors in varied locations and weather conditions, while maintaining safety and customer service standards.

Requirements

• Willingness to learn; instructor-led training is required to receive locator certification.
• Ability to drive local roads, work outdoors, and operate independently.
• Ability to perform locate duties before or after normal business hours when on call.
• Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Ability to access restricted or controlled areas, such as federal installations.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Strong work ethic.
• Ability to use a computer to complete documentation and send and receive email.
• Ability to lift, push, and pull at least 50 pounds.
• Ability to walk varied terrain, including grass, ditches, wooded areas, and gravel, in and around construction zones and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas in all types of weather.
• Ability to walk up to five miles in one day, several times a week.

Responsibilities

• Use mechanical and technical equipment to accurately locate underground utility facilities, including telephone, electric, cable television, gas, fiber optic, water, and sewer lines.
• Communicate daily with managers, excavation crews, and homeowners about locate issues.
• Interpret job order tickets and respond appropriately to support customer satisfaction.
• Read maps and blueprints to accurately locate utilities.
• Determine efficient routes to locate sites in rural and urban areas.
• Remove and replace manhole lids.
