About The Position

As a litigation lawyer, you will be primarily involved in prosecuting claims, proactively managing contentious files from their opening through to resolution, under the supervision of partners and senior lawyers, while progressively developing autonomy in the strategic conduct of cases, evidence management, and the representation of clients’ interests before courts of general jurisdiction and specialized tribunals, including in the context of class actions and arbitration proceedings. You will work within a dynamic litigation team, recognized for their rigorous, strategic, and results-driven approach. You will actively contribute to the management and development of complex cases, particularly in the areas of civil liability, insurance law, construction litigation, as well as in the automotive sector. In this role, you will be at the heart of litigation strategy, notably through in-depth analysis of the facts and legal issues, the development of case theories, the preparation of originating proceedings and ancillary motions, and the implementation of effective approaches aimed at recovery or compensation for damages suffered, in close collaboration with clients, experts, and other stakeholders involved in the file. This is a fee earner position which is part of a professional job family.

Requirements

  • Degree in civil law from a reputable university.
  • Member in good standing of the Barreau du Québec.
  • 2 to 4 years of relevant litigation experience, particularly insurance law, construction, commercial litigation and professional liability.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with fluency in both spoken and written English and French as well as an outstanding academic and professional record.
  • Excellent organization, analysis and summarization skills.
  • Sound judgement and legal reasoning.
  • Integrity, rigor and attention to detail.
  • Talent for negotiation and business acumen.
  • Abilities in strategy development.
  • Ability to develop trusted connections with clients and other external stakeholders, when applicable, as well as with partners, other lawyers and all levels of firm staff.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and manage litigation files as part of the team of Clyde & Co partner(s) and lawyer(s) as well as with clients.
  • Provide counsel and legal advice in various fields, particularly construction, civil and professional liability, amongst others.
  • Work closely with experts to prepare and present clients’ positions.
  • Understand and summarize issues that can be complex in legal as well as factual and technical matters.
  • Prepare and lead examinations on discovery sometimes alone or as part of a team.
  • Draft proceedings, petitions, factums and other applications to the Court.
  • Introduce and defend all types of petitions and applications to the Court and participate in mediation and trials.
  • Fulfil other responsibilities relating to this role or resulting from the emergence of new business priorities.
