About The Position

The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking a Lifeguard/Swim Instructor to join their team. This role supports the YMCA's mission of empowering people by improving health and well-being and inspiring action in neighborhoods. The position involves performing lifeguard and swim instructor duties while fostering a safe, positive, and inclusive atmosphere. Key responsibilities include promoting member engagement and safety by maintaining safe swimming conditions in and around the pool area, adhering to YMCA policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Current Lifeguard, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen certifications.
  • At least 16 years old.
  • Ability and willingness to take Child Abuse Prevention training on the first day and other required online and in-person trainings.
  • Must be able to pass Background and Reference checks.
  • Must possess, or obtain and maintain YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding certification and CPR/AED, Oxygen Administration and First aid certifications prior to hire.
  • Knowledge and skills in program activities and related aquatics and office equipment, and the ability to instruct participants in techniques.
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Six months or more of related aquatics experience.
  • Previous experience working with youth and diverse populations.
  • Previous experience working with youth preferably in a program setting and diverse populations.
  • Experience in demonstrating swim instructor skills preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the safety of members by scanning water and pool deck, monitoring activities, identifying safety issues, enforcing rules, and following emergency procedures.
  • Instructing swimming lessons in basic and advanced stroke skills to youth members.
  • Performing rescue actions, administering first aid and CPR, and completing related reports.
  • Preparing class lesson plans with a natural progression of skills appropriate for the age and abilities of the participants.
  • Communicating and applying safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areas.
  • Attending monthly, quarterly, and/or annual training and certification courses.
  • Maintaining effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and staff.
  • Identifying pool-related hazards and performing cleaning and sanitation protocols.
  • Completing accident, incident reports, and rescue data sheets.
  • Assisting with keeping accurate records of lesson attendance, member usage charts, and safety inspections.
  • Communicating with parents using session report cards.
  • Meeting performance measurements by promoting the Y's mission and supporting fundraising efforts.
  • Adhering to all safety protocols and procedures, including the use of PPE.
