About The Position

The Oklahoma City VA Health Care System is recruiting Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses (LPNs/LVNs) for a designated Community Based Outpatient Clinic. The role provides patient-centered outpatient primary care nursing under the direction of a registered nurse or provider, supporting safe and efficient clinic operations and high-quality care. The full-performance level is GS-6; selections may be made at grades GS-3 through GS-6. Duties and complexity increase with grade, with higher-grade nurses working with less oversight, performing more complex tasks, sharing technical expertise, and orienting or training less experienced staff. The LPN/LVN conducts structured health screenings and nursing interventions; supports preventive care and patient education; prepares patients and records for visits; assists providers and supports clinic flow; and contributes to schedule management, consult tracking, secure messaging, and follow-up. The nurse collaborates with the care team in huddles and meetings, supports patient-centered care planning and shared decision-making, and maintains a clean, safe, stocked clinical environment. This is a full-time, onsite position with a Monday–Friday schedule of 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; hours may change based on clinic needs. Telework is not available. Applicants must meet the applicable education, licensure, experience, and grade-level qualification requirements. The position requires a full, active, current, unrestricted LPN/LVN license in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia, and English proficiency. A qualifying practical or vocational nursing education is required, subject to the stated exceptions. Depending on grade, experience requirements range from none beyond basic requirements at GS-3 to one year of additional qualifying experience at GS-5 for GS-6, along with demonstrated nursing knowledge and competencies.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required, subject to the stated exception for noncitizens when qualified citizens cannot be recruited under applicable rules.
  • Graduate of a practical or vocational nursing school approved by the appropriate state agency and/or accredited by NLNAC when the program was completed, subject to the education exceptions described in the announcement.
  • Full, active, current, unrestricted LPN/LVN licensure in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • GS-3: No additional qualification requirements beyond the basic requirements.
  • GS-4: Six months of qualifying LPN/LVN experience; or graduation from an approved school and one year of qualifying nursing-care work experience; or graduation from an approved school program of at least 24 months.
  • GS-5: At least one year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent, plus the stated practical nursing knowledge, patient and family education, teamwork, medication administration and documentation, emergency response, and safety competencies.
  • GS-6: At least one year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent, fully meeting GS-5 performance requirements, plus the stated competencies in patient care, judgment, documentation, medication and treatment administration, urgent or emergency response, patient relationships, support for complex tests or specialized procedures, and precepting.
  • Applicants selected for VA employment in a testing-designated position must undergo urinalysis for illegal drug use; refusal results in denial of employment.
  • Must meet Selective Service registration requirements for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Must be able to complete a background/security investigation and online onboarding process and provide acceptable identification for pre-employment requirements.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical evaluation and participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.
  • Must complete the application requirements in the announcement’s Required Documents section.
