About The Position

St. Johns County is seeking a Part-time Library Services Specialist for the Main Branch Library within the St. Johns County Public Library System. This position will work 24-28 hours weekly, which may include weekends and occasional evenings. The role is primarily assigned to Youth Services and involves direct public interaction, requiring strong customer service skills. The St. Johns County Public Library System (SJCPLS) aims to foster a love of literature, the arts, and lifelong learning by providing diverse information, resources, and entertainment to the community. SJCPLS operates six branches and two bookmobiles, serving all areas of St. Johns County. In addition to traditional library materials, SJCPLS offers computer access, notary services, Inter-Library Loan, a Seed Library, test proctoring, and volunteer opportunities, along with a wide range of programming for all ages. Employees work in a team-oriented environment, assisting in circulation, reference, youth, and adult services. This position may require evening and weekend hours and may involve working at other library branches, county locations, or outreach events based on staffing needs. The primary responsibility is to support engaging programs and services for children and teens, necessitating creativity, knowledge of youth literature, and the ability to foster early literacy and lifelong learning in young patrons. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in a library setting with at least one (1) year experience working as a Library Assistant.
  • College education may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills in order to serve others.
  • Must be able to comprehend, speak and write the English language.
  • Must be able to operate a computer.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in circulation activities as assigned: issues and cancels patron’s borrower cards; resolves lost or damaged items; processes hold requests; collects fines and fees.
  • Participates in collection management activities as assigned: processes library materials for distribution; sorts donations; empties book drop; conducts bibliographic searches; shelves circulated and in-house materials; reads shelves for accuracy and propriety; identifies items for replacement or repair; mends books and other library materials.
  • Participates in reference activities and general inquiry: answers recurring or procedural questions regarding borrowing and access privileges, reader’s advisory, interlibrary loans, simple reference questions, and other library services or programs; assists patrons with computer reservations and operations; provides technical or clerical assistance in the selection of books or other library materials; provides technology demonstrations to patrons regarding how to access available services.
  • Participates in library programs and community events as assigned: operates and adjusts audio visual equipment; assists others in preparing meeting spaces to accommodate service delivery; collects and compiles statistics; assists in the training of staff.
  • Works a rotating schedule to include weekends, evenings and holidays or other branches as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
