About The Position

Under general supervision, performs skilled library duties at the paraprofessional level requiring an understanding of library-wide practices and procedures as well as specialized knowledge of specific library functional area. Accesses, edits and/or inputs data into various library databases for the purpose of processing, retrieving and/or maintaining information within a specific functional area. This position is focused on customer service and daily functions of the University Libraries service desk. This position primarily works evenings and weekends. Assists with opening and closing the library; may resolve building, equipment, safety, personnel emergencies, and patron issues. May provide work direction to student employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • 1-2 years library experience and familiarity with an automated library system
  • Reliable, dependable, and flexible with a demonstrated customer service focus
  • Ability to learn and follow detailed circulation procedures, library and university policies
  • Ability to work cooperatively with library patrons and co-workers
  • Strong understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer technology and internet skills

Nice To Haves

  • Public service experience in a college or university setting preferred
  • Familiarity with library database searching preferred

Responsibilities

  • Serves as first point of service at the library service desk. Performs high level circulation duties and provides basic reference assistance. Assists patrons in accessing and using library resources and technology equipment. Maintains a presence in the library when on duty so that patrons know whom to seek for assistance. Assists with opening and closing the library. Enforces library and University policies and procedures, including emergency procedures. May resolve building, equipment, safety, personnel emergencies, and patron issues. Answers assigned departmental email accounts, resolves issues, and refers communications to other library departments if needed. May prioritize and assign tasks and projects and give work direction to student employees. May assist in training student employees.
  • Works cooperatively with Makerspace Coordinator on day-to-day makerspace tasks, such as the 3D printing and Glowforge services. This includes, but is not limited to, running prints or cuts, coordinating with users on designs, troubleshooting print issues, machine repair and maintenance. Coordinates with faculty to teach maker skills as part of coursework both in a classroom setting and in the makerspace. Communicates with Makerspace Coordinator and colleagues on machine issues and maintenance schedule. Responsible for fulfilling orders for the 3D print service usage. Coordinates with makerspace coordinator to design new services and explore new technologies available on the market. Stays up to date on university safety guidelines and training for equipment in makerspace. Researches and recommends new makerspace equipment or software.
  • Contributes to major Access Services initiatives, including the coordination of stack maintenance and the oversight of the technology and equipment collection. This individual assists in the implementation of new resources by suggesting hardware and software purchases, monitoring equipment usage, and performing routine maintenance. Furthermore, they serve as a technical resource by training patrons and staff on the use of emerging library technologies to ensure the collection remains accessible and effective.
  • Provides input to and assists with strategic planning for the Access Services team and University Libraries division. Suggest innovative ideas to improve library public services. Participates in division sponsored events and other activities to make information and technology resources available to students, faculty, and staff. May serve on library-wide committees. Communicates and coordinates with other library departments. Performs other duties as assigned.
