About The Position

The Campaign Finance Board (CFB) is a nonpartisan, independent city agency dedicated to making local democracy more open, transparent, and equitable by empowering New Yorkers to participate more meaningfully in elections. Through initiatives like NYC Votes, the Voter Guide, and a public matching funds program, the CFB aims to increase voter engagement, support candidates, and enhance transparency and accountability in local government. The Legal division, comprising 9 attorneys and 14 staff, handles all legal and investigatory work for the CFB, providing counsel on campaign finance, election law, employment law, contracting, conflict of interest, and other legal areas. This division also includes an Investigations unit that works with the Audit unit to probe potential violations of CFB jurisdiction and support enforcement actions.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in law school for the next year
  • Completion of at least one year of law school
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Ability to multitask, organize, prioritize, and manage time effectively
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a small team
  • Creativity, teamwork, and empathy
  • Demonstrated interest in public service
  • Strong academic credentials
  • Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school
  • Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in NYC government, election law, campaign finance or a related field
  • Experience in administrative law and/or regulatory enforcement
  • Experience in legislation and regulation

Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal and legislative history research
  • Draft memoranda, enforcement documents, and legal briefs
  • Analyze legislation and regulations
  • Assist with litigation, including administrative hearings, collection actions, and Article 78 proceedings
