About The Position

The Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) is seeking a Learning Support Teacher for the Whycocomagh Education Centre. This position involves supporting students with high needs, coordinating Individual Program Plans (IPPs), and providing programming support. The SRCE is part of Nova Scotia's public education system, established to support student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. With approximately 1,166 employees, the SRCE operates 20 schools and pre-primary programs, serving a large student population across four counties in northeastern Nova Scotia. Teachers hired into new positions may be required to participate in New Teacher training.

Requirements

  • Valid teacher certification for the Province of Nova Scotia
  • Completion of a graduate level program in inclusive education or related field
  • Excellent classroom and student management skills
  • Knowledge and experience in the application of technologies used to enhance instruction and learning (eg. Mimio, Google Classrooms, etc)
  • Knowledge and/or experience in implementing inclusive teaching and assessment strategies
  • Major/Minor in English
  • Demonstrated competency in formal, individualized student assessment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including report-writing
  • In-depth familiarity with a wide range of exceptionalities, learning challenges, sensory deficits, disabling conditions, etc. and their implications for successful educational programming
  • Ability to work as a team member in all phases of educational programming
  • Knowledge and understanding of all pertinent provincial and SRCE policies pertaining to the instruction of students with special needs
  • Skills in communicating and working in collaborative partnerships for programming
  • Ability to work closely with Teacher Assistants (TAs) to oversee and ensure appropriate educational programming
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a variety of teaching models (group, individual, co-teaching, learning centre)
  • Training and experience in the development and implementation of IPPs
  • Experience in working with children and youth and with special needs
  • Experience in supporting accessible learning (eg. universal design for learning)
  • Demonstrate effective use of a variety of Assistive Technologies for students with special needs

Responsibilities

  • Co-ordination of IPPs for caseload of students with high needs
  • Programming support for students with a variety of needs, including skills-based instruction, executive functioning, enrichment, etc., as a key member of the teams which support students in the school
  • Supporting classroom teachers & specialist teachers through co-teaching, coaching, mentoring, resources and training
  • Intensive, direct teaching intervention with students as per their identified needs (per the School Planning Team, or the Student Planning Team)
  • Liaison with classroom teachers
  • Integration of programming support into the classroom/school setting
  • Assessment, evaluation, and reporting on individual student progress as a key member of the Student Planning Team
  • Development and implementation of interventions with the Student Planning Team and the Teacher Support Team (including classroom teachers and parents)
  • Curriculum Support as determined by the School Planning Team and the Teacher Support Team
  • Other Learning Support duties as applicable
