About The Position

Sargent & Lundy is hiring a Lead Underground Transmission Line Engineer 2 to lead the design of complex underground transmission lines for voltages up to 500 kV. The role applies and expands expertise in routing, duct bank configurations, manhole placement, and electrical principles. It includes cost analysis, design criteria, siting and routing in complex environments, physical design, cable studies, structural design, specifications, and coordination with vendors, clients, and project teams. The position uses a hybrid work arrangement: three days per week in the office and two days remotely. A generous relocation package may be available depending on the employee’s location. The company does not sponsor U.S. work authorization for this position.

Requirements

BS degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
Current PE license.
Proficiency with CYMCAP modeling.
Proficiency with cable tensioning calculations and software.
12 or more years of experience leading a design team in the development of complex underground transmission projects.
Design experience incorporating code requirements, EPRI recommendations, and client requirements.
Experience developing cost estimates and creating and coordinating schedules.
Experience with XLPE cable design.
Experience preparing specifications for installation and procurement of underground transmission line materials and components.
Knowledge of how to verify and review right-of-way requirements, bonding schemes, underground transmission line plan and profile drawings, and other construction documents.
Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles used to produce technical plans, drawings, and models.
Experience writing and providing supporting documentation for engineering calculations.
Familiarity with design codes and standards such as NESC, EPRI Green Book, IEC, CSA, IEEE, ANSI, IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
Proficiency with MS Office applications.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

Experience with High Pressure Gas Filled or High-Pressured Fluid Filled pipe-type cable systems and associated equipment.
Experience with underground distribution or low-voltage cable systems.
Interest in learning and effectively using emerging technologies where relevant to the role; experience with AI, automation, programming, or similar technologies is valued but not required.

Responsibilities

Design complex underground transmission lines for voltages up to 500 kV.
Perform cost analyses and develop design criteria.
Develop siting and routing plans in complex environments and determine manhole placement.
Perform physical design, including duct bank layouts, trenchless designs, cable-pulling calculations, and drawing packages.
Conduct cable selection studies, determine bonding schemes, and perform ampacity calculations.
Develop riser structure configurations and structural loading.
Develop specifications for cable procurement, duct bank installation, trenchless installation, and general construction.
Coordinate with vendors and clients to specify transmission line components.
Direct a project team of engineers, designers, and drafters.
