About The Position

The Lead Underground Transmission Line Engineer 2 applies and expands expertise in underground transmission line engineering, including routing, duct bank configurations, manhole placement, and electrical principles. The role designs complex underground transmission lines for voltages up to 500 kV and leads a project team of engineers, designers, and drafters. The position is hybrid, with three days per week in the office and two days working remotely. A relocation package may be available depending on location. Sargent & Lundy does not sponsor U.S. work authorization for this position.

Requirements

Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
Current Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Proficiency with CYMCAP modeling.
Proficiency with cable tensioning calculations and software.
12 or more years of experience leading a design team in the development of complex underground transmission projects.
Design experience incorporating code requirements, EPRI recommendations, and client requirements.
Experience developing cost estimates and creating and coordinating schedules.
Experience with XLPE cable design.
Experience preparing specifications for installation and procurement of underground transmission line materials and components.
Knowledge of how to verify and review right-of-way requirements, bonding schemes, underground transmission line plan and profile drawings, and other construction documents.
Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles used to produce technical plans, drawings, and models.
Experience writing and providing supporting documentation for engineering calculations.
Familiarity with design codes and standards such as NESC, EPRI Green Book, IEC, CSA, IEEE, ANSI, IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Attention to detail.
Must not require U.S. work authorization sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

Experience with High Pressure Gas Filled or High-Pressured Fluid Filled pipe-type cable systems and associated equipment.
Experience with underground distribution or low-voltage cable systems.
Interest in learning and effectively using emerging technologies where relevant to the role; experience with AI, automation, programming, or similar technologies is valued but not required.

Responsibilities

Design complex underground transmission lines for voltages up to 500 kV.
Perform cost analyses; develop design criteria; support siting and routing in complex environments; and determine manhole placement.
Develop physical designs, including duct bank layouts and trenchless designs, cable-pulling calculations, and drawing packages.
Conduct cable selection studies, determine bonding schemes, and perform ampacity calculations.
Develop riser structure configurations and structural loading.
Develop specifications for cable procurement, duct bank installation, trenchless installation, and general construction.
Coordinate with vendors and clients to specify transmission line components.
Direct project teams of other engineers, designers, and drafters.
