Lead PCB Design Engineer

Proper Voltage•Carlsbad, CA
•$130,000 - $175,000

About The Position

We’re building high-performance battery and power systems, and we need a Lead PCB Design Engineer who can take ownership of complex designs and ship production-ready hardware fast. You will work directly with electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to bring power electronics from concept to reality. The role can be remote or in person. The engineer owns PCB layout from concept through release using Altium Designer, including multilayer boards with 4–12+ layers for battery management systems, DC-DC converters and power stages, and high-current distribution. The work includes optimizing layouts for high-current paths and low impedance, thermal performance, and EMI/EMC compliance; defining stack-ups and collaborating with fabrication and assembly partners; building and maintaining Altium component libraries and design rules; and supporting bring-up, debugging, and rapid iteration cycles.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of PCB layout experience.
  • Strong expertise in Altium Designer.
  • Proven experience with power electronics, including buck/boost converters and switching regulators.
  • Proven experience with high-current and/or high-voltage layouts.
  • Experience with EMI-aware design practices.
  • Solid understanding of IPC standards, including IPC-2221 and IPC-2152.
  • Solid understanding of thermal and current density considerations.
  • Ability to work independently and move fast in a startup environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with lithium-ion battery systems or BMS.
  • Startup or small-team experience.
  • Familiarity with UL, IEC, or automotive standards.
  • Experience working directly with overseas fabs/CMs.
  • Prior experience with smart battery management systems for various cell chemistries.
  • Prior experience implementing wired and wireless communication protocols.
  • Prior experience laying out mixed-signal ASICs, FPGAs, and/or CPLDs.

Responsibilities

  • Own PCB layout from concept through release using Altium Designer.
  • Design 4–12+ layer boards for battery management systems, DC-DC converters and power stages, and high-current distribution.
  • Optimize layouts for high-current paths and low impedance, thermal performance, and EMI/EMC compliance.
  • Define stack-ups and collaborate with fabrication and assembly partners.
  • Build and maintain component libraries and design rules in Altium.
  • Support bring-up, debugging, and rapid iteration cycles.

Benefits

  • Equity options as part of the compensation package.
  • Comprehensive healthcare benefits, including medical, dental, and vision.
