Lead Electrical Engineer 2 - Mission Critical

Sargent & Lundy•Oak Ridge, TN
•Hybrid

About The Position

Lead a project team of engineers and designers in the design, modification, and analysis of electrical systems supporting nuclear material processing, nuclear waste treatment, storage and disposal systems, and commercial nuclear power plants. Assignments include designing, investigating, troubleshooting, and resolving a variety of electrical engineering issues. The position offers a hybrid arrangement with work from home and in-office work. The role involves leading detailed electrical design phases, coordinating design activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and client requirements, and helping ensure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget. The engineer prepares and reviews electrical calculations, design inputs, reports, studies, and equipment purchase specifications; interfaces with vendors and clients; independently reviews others’ work; and mentors less experienced engineers. Peer learning and knowledge sharing are supported through Sargent & Lundy’s processes and Communities of Practice. Sargent & Lundy’s Government Services Division provides engineering design and consulting support to DOE sites and national laboratories, including the DOE Environmental Management Directorate and NNSA laboratories and sites. Its work includes designing facilities, systems, and equipment to treat, store, and dispose of nuclear waste and to safely handle and process nuclear material.

  • Experience selecting equipment and materials, defining control philosophy, and preparing and assembling calculations and specifications.
  • Experience designing electrical systems, including low-voltage distribution systems (transformers, generators, and motors), communication systems, equipment selection, and analytical calculations.
  • At least 3 years of experience leading an engineering design team through all phases of a project design.
  • Technical knowledge of available equipment and proven pre-engineered systems used to execute systems design.
  • Experience serving as a firm/client liaison in a support or lead engineering role.
  • Experience reviewing design drawings created by others.

Nice To Haves

  • MSEE degree preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Construction and start-up experience.
  • Commissioning experience.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the Electrical team lead coordinating detailed design phases for all aspects of electrical engineering work.
  • Lead efforts to ensure projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget.
  • Coordinate systems design activities to ensure installation and operations comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Prepare and review detailed electrical calculations, including arc flash, voltage drop, fault current, and lighting calculations.
  • Prepare design-input documentation for drawing production, including master diagrams and master schematics.
  • Interface with vendors to prepare materials and equipment purchase specifications for client recommendations.
  • Prepare reports and studies that present technical information clearly and concisely and meet client requirements and S&L formats.
  • Perform independent reviews of work by others, including calculations and drawing preparation.
