About The Position

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Language Program Director will direct and manage the language program operations and ensure delivery of bəqəlšułucid services to the Muckleshoot community.

Requirements

  • A valid Muckleshoot Indian Tribe bəqəlšułucid Teaching Certificate is required at the time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.
  • Ten (10) years of native education experience.
  • Three (3) years supervisory/mentoring/teaching experience.
  • Skilled in designing and implementing language and/or culture programs;
  • Able to confidently speak, understand, read, write, and teach bəqəlšułucid
  • Able to speak, understand, read, and teach bəqəlšułucid
  • Knowledge and understanding of Muckleshoot Tribal Culture and history;
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and techniques;
  • Knowledge of budgeting;
  • Knowledge of child development;
  • Knowledge of tribal programs;
  • Knowledge of basic marketing techniques and principles;
  • Must be able to speak, understand, read, and teach beqelSuAucid.
  • A valid Washington State First Peoples’ Language teaching certificate in a Southern Lushootseed language is required at time of appointment or at a time set by the Tribe.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain the Muckleshoot Language Program, including a leadership role in curriculum research and development, and the development and maintenance of a language resource center.
  • Provide leadership and direction for bəqəlšułucid services by overseeing language integration throughout the Muckleshoot community.
  • Oversee language events and gatherings (i.e., workshops, language fairs, potlatches, conferences, and natural resource gathering trips) and develop an annual plan of bəqəlšułucid services and language events for the Muckleshoot community.
  • Responsible for working with the Language Program budgets, including budget planning through monitoring and controlling departmental expenditures. Make recommendations on budget amendments and program operational revisions, and track program expenditures.
  • Perform ongoing assessment of bəqəlšułucid services within the Muckleshoot community.
  • Develop and manage a records management system and language database appropriate for the program.
  • Work with the Muckleshoot community and other local tribes to create certification standards for teaching bəqəlšułucid.
  • Use best practices in recruiting, training, motivating, and supervising bəqəlšułucid staff, providing guidance, counseling, training, and development, performance management, and disciplinary action as needed.
  • Professionally represent the Muckleshoot Language Program to other tribes, groups, organizations, educational institutions, and the general public.
  • Make periodic reports to Tribal Administration and Culture Committee as requested.
  • Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
