About The Position

The Green Rainwater Infrastructure Branch designs, delivers, and manages a variety of assets, called green rainwater infrastructure (GRI), that treat, retain, and detain rainwater runoff from streets and other public spaces. Within the team, this position will be responsible for producing GRI designs and supporting project implementation from planning through construction. Typical projects include corner bulge bioretention, rainwater tree trenches, permeable pavements and larger scale assets like stormwater wetlands.

Requirements

  • University graduation with specialization in landscape architecture and a minimum of two years' experience in landscape design and development or an equivalent combination of education and experience that focuses on parks and public open spaces.
  • Professional license from the BC Society of Landscape Architecture.
  • Thorough knowledge of GRI design, materials, construction methods and ongoing operations and maintenance.
  • Considerable knowledge of soil science, ecology, horticultural science, and urban landscape design principles.
  • Familiarity with the City’s Rain City Strategy and Healthy Waters Plan.
  • Proficiency in plan set production and drafting in AutoCAD is required.
  • Ability to prepare preliminary drawings, sketch plans, construction drawings, specifications and cost estimates for a variety of transportation projects.
  • Ability to provide field reviews and evaluation of public infrastructure installations during and post construction.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, consultants, contractors and other employees.
  • Knowledge of governmental, legal and financial procedures for municipal development and of the City by-laws relative to infrastructure implementation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and to provide professional interdisciplinary advice and technical guidance while functioning effectively in a team environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in Adobe Suite (e.g., InDesign, Illustrator and/or Photoshop) or other graphics software is desirable.
  • Experience developing and managing consultant contracts, including scopes of work, requests for proposals and contract execution.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership, forward thinking, and GRI and landscape design expertise.
  • Provide project management for specific implementation projects with an emphasis on landscape architecture and public realm design.
  • Performs site evaluations and prepares preliminary site design concepts for GRI projects.
  • Consults with project stakeholders, including other municipal infrastructure groups, utilities, citizens, and community groups on assigned projects.
  • Prepares detailed landscape design drawings for construction, including specifications for grading, surface and subsurface layout, materials, cross-sections, profiles, details, and planting plans.
  • Prepares cost estimates for GRI at various stages of a project.
  • Provide professional guidance to technical and operational staff and to outside consultants and contractors.
  • Examine and check plans, produced by others, in the preliminary and working drawing stages for suitability of layout, accuracy, constructability and accessibility.
  • Supports construction through coordination, procurement, field inspections or review of inspection reports by others, preparation of site instructions with the engineer-of-record, deficiency reviews, and project closeout.
  • Manages consultants and provides plan review for externally delivered GRI projects.
  • Assists the supervisor and manager in the administration of the branch.
  • Performs other related work as required.
