Laboratory Systems Analyst

ConvenientMD•Manchester, NH

About The Position

The Laboratory Systems Technical Analyst serves as the technical and operational bridge among Laboratory Services, Information Technology, clinical operations, technology vendors, and external laboratory partners. The role supports the systems, interfaces, instruments, and workflows needed for accurate and timely laboratory order processing and result delivery. It administers and optimizes the Laboratory Information System (LIS), supports LIS-to-EMR interfaces, maintains analyzer and middleware connectivity, troubleshoots technical and workflow issues, supports new test implementations, and protects laboratory data integrity. The analyst collaborates across technical, clinical, and operational teams to maintain reliable laboratory services, support organizational growth, and ensure laboratory systems and electronic records meet applicable quality, security, privacy, and regulatory requirements. Responsibilities include LIS configuration and workflow support; interface and analyzer troubleshooting; implementation and validation of tests, systems, and reporting; data reconciliation and analytics; controlled documentation and compliance support; user education; and participation in incident, downtime, recovery, and change-management activities. Occasional after-hours support may be required as operationally needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, healthcare informatics, medical laboratory science, computer science, healthcare administration, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
  • At least two years of experience supporting healthcare technology, laboratory systems, clinical applications, interfaces, analyzer connectivity, or a related healthcare environment.
  • Experience supporting an LIS, EMR, healthcare interface, laboratory analyzer, middleware application, or comparable clinical system.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory operations or healthcare data workflows, including laboratory orders, specimens, testing, and result reporting.
  • Working knowledge of HL7 messaging and healthcare interoperability concepts.
  • Experience configuring, testing, validating, documenting, or troubleshooting clinical system workflows.
  • Understanding of data integrity, privacy, security, controlled documentation, and change-management requirements.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, collaborate across teams, and follow issues through resolution.

Nice To Haves

  • Three or more years of experience supporting a clinical laboratory, reference laboratory, diagnostic testing organization, or multi-site healthcare environment.
  • Experience with Dendi, Athena, Experity, or comparable LIS and EMR platforms.
  • Experience troubleshooting HL7 orders, results, acknowledgments, field mappings, and interface errors.
  • Experience supporting laboratory analyzers, instrument middleware, interface engines, reference laboratory connections, or molecular diagnostic testing.
  • Familiarity with FHIR, APIs, web services, LOINC, SNOMED CT, or other healthcare interoperability standards and technologies.
  • Experience with laboratory autoverification, reflex testing, test catalog management, electronic requisitions, or result-routing workflows.
  • Experience with Power BI, SQL, reporting tools, interface-monitoring tools, or healthcare analytics platforms.
  • Knowledge of laboratory billing workflows, medical-necessity requirements, or billing-related interfaces.
  • Experience working in a CLIA-certified or accredited laboratory environment.
  • Relevant certification or formal training in medical laboratory science, healthcare informatics, healthcare IT, interoperability, or project management.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary operational administrator and subject matter resource for the LIS and associated workflows.
  • Configure, test, validate, maintain, and optimize LIS functionality, including test catalogs, order codes, result dictionaries, reference ranges, reflex rules, report formats, specimen requirements, and routing rules.
  • Support end-to-end laboratory workflows from order entry and specimen collection through testing, result reporting, and downstream clinical use.
  • Translate laboratory and clinical needs into system requirements, workflow specifications, and configuration decisions.
  • Support user access, role-based permissions, system upgrades, vendor releases, regression testing, and production changes.
  • Monitor system performance and identify opportunities to improve reliability, usability, data quality, and workflow efficiency.
  • Support interfaces among the LIS, EMR platforms, analyzers, middleware, reference laboratories, practice management systems, and other connected applications, including Dendi, Athena, Experity, and future platforms.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot laboratory orders, results, acknowledgments, and HL7 messages; investigate missing, delayed, duplicate, incorrectly mapped, or improperly routed data.
  • Perform message validation, field mapping, reconciliation, error monitoring, and root-cause analysis.
  • Coordinate end-to-end interface testing and changes with internal teams, external laboratories, and technology vendors; maintain interface specifications, mapping documents, test scripts, validation evidence, issue logs, and support procedures.
  • Support analyzer and middleware connectivity, order transmission, specimen routing, result delivery, instrument identifiers, and exception handling.
  • Troubleshoot analyzer-to-LIS connectivity problems, transmission failures, and result discrepancies while protecting data integrity and patient safety.
  • Support laboratory workstations, barcode scanners, label printers, specimen-labeling systems, and related technology; coordinate installation, configuration, inventory, maintenance, replacement, and vendor support.
  • Support reference laboratory and send-out testing workflows, including electronic orders, specimen routing, result delivery, corrections, and cancellations.
  • Participate in downtime response, recovery, business continuity, and operational support during critical incidents.
  • Support new assays, panels, instruments, interfaces, and laboratory services through workflow design, configuration, testing, validation, and implementation.
  • Build and test ordering workflows, result pathways, reflex logic, report formats, routing rules, and system dictionaries; validate the complete order-to-result lifecycle before implementation.
  • Develop test plans and scripts, coordinate user-acceptance testing, document defects, verify remediation, retain validation evidence, and participate in readiness reviews, cutover, go-live support, and post-launch stabilization.
  • Develop and maintain reports, dashboards, data extracts, and monitoring tools supporting quality, billing, compliance, and operational performance.
  • Support KPI reporting, turnaround-time monitoring, interface-reliability reporting, exception tracking, recurring-issue analysis, data reconciliation, and Power BI or comparable analytics tools.
  • Support laboratory systems and electronic records in accordance with applicable HIPAA, OSHA, HITECH, DHHS, CLIA, COLA, CAP accreditation, privacy, security, and organizational requirements.
  • Maintain controlled documentation for validation, testing, system changes, interface updates, release approvals, issue resolution, downtime, and recovery.
  • Participate in audit preparation, inspection readiness, quality assurance, and corrective action activities involving laboratory systems or electronic data.
  • Develop and maintain procedures, training materials, knowledge articles, downtime instructions, and user support resources.
  • Provide technical and operational support to laboratory staff, clinic teams, providers, and other authorized users; educate users on laboratory ordering, specimen labeling, result review, downtime workflows, and system changes.
  • Communicate technical issues, risks, dependencies, status, and resolution steps to technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Escalate concerns that may affect patient identification, specimen integrity, result accuracy, regulatory compliance, data security, or patient safety.
  • Participate in incident, problem, change, and release-management processes, including occasional after-hours support as operationally required.
