About The Position

Maryland Department of Labor is currently accepting applications for a Wage and Hour Investigator Trainee position within the Division of Labor and Industry, Wage and Labor Standards unit. This position is part of a structured training program designed to teach the principles, procedures, and techniques for enforcing Maryland wage and labor standards laws and regulations. The trainee will assist with investigations, review employment records, gather information, and support case documentation under the guidance of Workplace Rights Enforcement Supervisors.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • No experience required.

  • Ability to speak and write fluent Spanish.
  • Experience reviewing and organizing information, identifying discrepancies and relevant details, and conducting basic research using laws, regulations, policies, and other reference materials.
  • Experience communicating effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing, with employees, employers, coworkers, and other stakeholders.
  • Experience maintaining accurate records, organizing information, preparing clear written documentation, and managing multiple assignments while meeting established deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Learns to assist with investigations of employer practices to determine compliance with Maryland wage and labor standards laws.
  • Assists with interviews, record reviews, workplace visits, and evidence gathering under close supervision.
  • Learns to review payroll, personnel, and time records to identify potential violations.
  • Assists with wage calculations and researching applicable laws and policies.
  • Learns to prepare case documentation and investigative summaries under supervision.
  • Assists with corrective action recommendations and case preparation for administrative proceedings.
  • Learns to provide basic information on Maryland wage and labor standards laws to employers and employees.
  • Assists with outreach activities and attends training to develop investigative knowledge and skills.
  • Learns to communicate professionally with employers, employees, and other stakeholders to obtain information and respond to routine inquiries under supervision.
  • Learns to prepare investigative notes, reports, and correspondence that accurately document interviews, record reviews, site visits, and other case activities.
  • Assists with maintaining organized investigative files.
  • Performs all other duties assigned.
