Labeling Backend Software Engineer

Avride•Austin, TX
•Onsite

About The Position

Avride is hiring a Labeling Backend Software Engineer for its Labeling Backend team, which builds data infrastructure for large sensor datasets used by perception and machine-learning pipelines. The team’s services support automated and human-in-the-loop labeling workflows and provide labeled data for autonomous vehicles and delivery robots. The engineer will own backend services that handle large datasets, working across APIs, data ingestion pipelines, databases, and orchestration frameworks. This is a hands-on individual-contributor role focused primarily on designing, writing, and shipping code. The engineer will take features from design through production, make architectural tradeoffs, and help maintain reliable, high-throughput, maintainable systems. The role is onsite; remote work options are not available. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. The employer is not offering relocation or sponsorship.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of professional software engineering experience building and operating backend services in production; internships and academic projects do not count.
  • Strong proficiency in Python, including backend frameworks and asynchronous stacks such as asyncio, aiohttp, and FastAPI.
  • Production experience with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimization, ORMs such as SQLAlchemy or Django ORM, and migrations such as Alembic.
  • Solid grounding in system design, algorithms, and data structures applied to real systems at scale.
  • Hands-on production experience with cloud platforms, containerization such as Docker and Kubernetes, and cloud object storage such as AWS S3 or GCS.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • The role is not suited for new graduates or internship candidates.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Argo or Airflow.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems or products.
  • Experience with big-data and distributed data-processing tools such as Spark or PyArrow.
  • Experience working with 3D sensor data, including point clouds or sensor fusion.
  • Previous work in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or ML-heavy environments.
  • C++ development experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and own backend systems managing the full lifecycle of labeled data, from ingestion to delivery, including Python services, APIs, and databases.
  • Build and scale data preparation and labeling pipelines that transform lidar, camera, and radar sensor streams into label-ready formats.
  • Manage annotation workflows at scale using automated and human labeling and orchestration frameworks.
  • Design and implement integrations with external vendors and internal tools so data and feedback move across labeling workflows.
  • Develop automated validation and quality-assurance systems to safeguard dataset integrity, monitor quality, and surface performance insights.
  • Partner with ML and Perception teams to turn evolving requirements into scalable data solutions that drive model improvements.
  • Integrate ML automation into annotation workflows to increase human labeling efficiency.
  • Lead technical design for the engineer’s area, review code, and mentor other engineers.
  • Own services end-to-end, including design, implementation, deployment, monitoring, and on-call responsibilities.
