Labeling Backend Software Engineer

Avride•Austin, TX

About The Position

Avride is hiring a Labeling Backend Software Engineer for its Labeling Backend team, which builds data infrastructure for large sensor datasets used in perception and machine-learning pipelines. The engineer will own backend services supporting automated and human-in-the-loop labeling workflows, handling APIs, data ingestion, databases, and orchestration. The role involves taking features from design through production and maintaining reliable, high-throughput, maintainable services. It is a hands-on individual-contributor position focused primarily on designing, writing, and shipping code, with independent ownership and technical leadership within the engineer’s area. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. Avride does not offer relocation, sponsorship, or remote work options. Avride is an equal opportunity employer and provides reasonable accommodations to qualified applicants and employees with disabilities.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of professional software-engineering experience building and operating production backend services; internships and academic projects do not count.
  • Experience owning services end to end, including design, implementation, deployment, monitoring, and on-call.
  • Strong Python proficiency, including backend frameworks and asynchronous stacks such as asyncio, aiohttp, and FastAPI.
  • Production experience with relational databases, preferably PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimization, ORMs such as SQLAlchemy or Django ORM, and migrations such as Alembic.
  • Strong grounding in system design, algorithms, and data structures, applied to real systems at scale.
  • Hands-on production experience with cloud platforms, containerization such as Docker and Kubernetes, and cloud object storage such as AWS S3 or GCS.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with workflow orchestration tools such as Argo or Airflow.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems or products.
  • Experience with big-data and distributed data-processing tools such as Spark or PyArrow.
  • Experience with 3D sensor data, including point clouds or sensor fusion.
  • Previous work in autonomous vehicles, robotics, or machine-learning-heavy environments.
  • C++ development experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and own backend systems for the lifecycle of labeled data, including ingestion and delivery, core Python services, APIs, and databases.
  • Build and scale data-preparation and labeling pipelines that transform large lidar, camera, and radar sensor streams into label-ready formats.
  • Manage annotation workflows at scale using automated and human labeling and modern orchestration frameworks.
  • Develop integrations with external vendors and internal tools to enable data and feedback flow across labeling workflows.
  • Develop automated validation and quality-assurance systems to protect dataset integrity, monitor quality, and surface performance insights.
  • Partner with ML and Perception teams to turn evolving requirements into scalable data solutions that improve models.
  • Integrate ML automation into annotation workflows to increase human-labeling efficiency.
  • Lead technical design for the engineer’s area, review code, and mentor other engineers.
