Software Engineer - Backend
About The Position
Phorest is seeking a Senior Backend Software Engineer to join its Engineering team. The role involves building and improving the technology behind a large-scale, distributed platform used by salons, spas, and MedSpas worldwide. The engineer will work with engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver useful, reliable software and will have opportunities to influence technical decisions, share knowledge, and develop their skills. The technology stack includes Java, event-driven architecture, Docker, and serverless technologies. Phorest values clean code, pragmatic decision-making, continuous improvement, feature flags, and continuous delivery. Flexi-time and working from home are possible, and remote work is also an option.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Strong proficiency in Java and object-oriented software design.
- Experience designing, building, and maintaining backend services in a production environment.
- Comfort working with RESTful APIs.
- Good understanding of JavaScript and modern web technologies.
- Understanding of scalable, distributed systems and the ability to reason about technical trade-offs.
- Commitment to code quality, testing, maintainability, and building durable software.
- Confidence contributing ideas and opinions to technical discussions.
- Collaborative approach to working across disciplines and supporting others.
- Proactive attitude, ownership of work, and interest in improving how things are done.
- Growth mindset, enjoyment of learning, and judgment about when to adopt new technologies versus keep things simple.

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable backend services and systems.
- Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and designers to turn business requirements into well-designed, shippable features.
- Contribute to technical design discussions and make informed decisions about architecture, performance, and scalability.
- Write clean, maintainable, well-tested code in line with engineering best practices.
- Build and improve RESTful APIs and integrations for the platform.
- Own features from initial design through deployment and ongoing improvement.
- Participate in code reviews, share knowledge, and support the development of other engineers.
- Identify opportunities to improve systems, development processes, and engineering standards.
- Stay informed about emerging technologies and introduce tools and solutions when they add practical value.
