About The Position

The Lab Supervisor oversees laboratory personnel and operations while also working as a Lab Technologist/Technician at least two days per week. The role monitors testing and specimen examinations, maintains acceptable analytic performance, ensures systems are functioning before results are reported, oversees proficiency testing and corrective actions, and reports problems to the assigned Technical Consultant or designee. The supervisor also supports physicians, extenders, and nurses in patient treatment and care, including locating and triaging patients, obtaining vital signs, assessing problems, and preparing patients for examinations and treatment. The position supervises staffing, quality, policy compliance, training, competency evaluations, performance evaluations, schedules, payroll approval, and technical support. It also maintains laboratory records and inventory, implements safety requirements, supports onboarding and interviews, and handles operational and administrative tasks. The supervisor may work at any center due to staffing needs, emergencies, or reduced work, and must remain available when breaks or meals are interrupted for patient care or center operations.

Requirements

Must be at least 18 years of age.
Minimum typing experience required.
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent and meet the applicable laboratory education and experience requirements.
For incumbents located in Maryland or Virginia: an associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology plus two years of training or experience; or a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or chemical, physical, or biological science plus one year of training or experience.
For incumbents located in New Jersey or Pennsylvania: a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or chemical, physical, or biological science, or HEW certification as a Medical Technologist, plus six years of laboratory experience.
Thorough knowledge of medical technology principles, concepts, and methodologies sufficient to perform a broad range of testing.
Knowledge of mathematical and statistical methods sufficient to calculate and convert analytical data to test results.
Knowledge and skill sufficient to use and maintain laboratory instrumentation.
Knowledge of related disciplines to integrate and correlate test results with other laboratory data and clinical information.
Ability to produce reliable, quality laboratory results under stressful conditions.
Ability to perform CPR and update certification as needed.
Ability to hear pages, bells, and the phone system.
Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods, possibly four to seven hours at a time.
Ability to lift moderate to heavy items weighing 20–50 pounds.
Excellent visual, verbal, written, and typed communication skills.
Ability to prioritize and manage numerous tasks at one time.
Must understand and perform Technologist/Technician work as outlined in the corresponding job description.
Must provide the highest quality medical care and professionalism.

Responsibilities

Monitor test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable analytic performance, and report problems or concerns to the assigned Technical Consultant or designee.
Ensure remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications, and report problems to the assigned Technical Consultant.
Ensure proficiency testing is performed within the appropriate time frame.
Assist physicians, extenders, and nurses with patient treatment and care, including locating and triaging patients, obtaining accurate vital signs, assessing patient problems, and preparing patients for examinations and treatment.
Respond respectfully and promptly to requests from physicians, extenders, and nurses.
Supervise lab personnel to ensure responsibilities are carried out, work meets quality standards, and policies, regulations, and procedures are followed.
Ensure patient test results are not reported unless test systems are functioning properly, and report system problems to the assigned Technical Consultant.
Submit monthly staffing schedules, approve lab personnel payroll in a timely manner, and provide orientation and in-service training to testing personnel.
Assist with interviewing lab candidates and on-site training of lab personnel.
Function as an administrator and work as a Lab Technologist/Technician at least two days per week.
Evaluate and document the competency of all testing personnel.
Evaluate lab personnel at six and 12 months during their first year and annually or as needed thereafter.
Assist lab personnel in person or by telephone with technical problems during testing.
Maintain records of laboratory tests for two years.
Implement safety regulations as directed.
Review laboratory inventory data and notify the DMS when inventory adjustments are needed.
Ensure lab personnel understand new and revised policies and procedures.
Work with employees and externs during on-the-job training.
Ensure Charge Change and Courtesy write-offs are forwarded daily to Administrative Services.
Demonstrate proficiency using the medical record system.
Maintain a clean work area, perform biological cleanup in accordance with OSHA guidelines, and complete other assigned maintenance tasks.
Receive and store ordered supplies.
Remain available as needed when breaks and mealtimes may be interrupted for patient care and center operations.
Attend staff meetings as directed.
Foster teamwork in a positive and professional atmosphere.
Work at any center as needed due to staffing, center emergencies, or reductions in work.
Operate, maintain, and use medical and office equipment as trained.
Perform other duties as directed.
