About The Position

The Lab Supervisor is responsible for overseeing laboratory operations, ensuring the quality and accuracy of test analyses and specimen examinations. This role involves managing personnel, maintaining equipment, adhering to safety regulations, and providing direct patient care support when needed. The supervisor ensures that all laboratory activities meet established performance specifications, policies, and regulatory requirements. They also play a key role in staff training, competency evaluation, and inventory management. The position requires a thorough understanding of medical technology principles and the ability to produce reliable results under stressful conditions.

Requirements

  • Employee must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Minimum typing experience required.
  • Incumbent located in Maryland or Virginia must hold an associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology and have two years training/experience; or a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or chemical, physical, or biological science and one year training/experience.
  • Incumbent located in New Jersey or Pennsylvania must hold a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or chemical, physical, or biological science or HEW certification by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare as a Medical Technologist, plus six years of laboratory experience.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of Medical Technology principles, concepts, and methodologies sufficient to perform a broad range of testing.
  • Knowledge of mathematical and statistical methods sufficient to calculate and convert analytical data to test results is required.
  • Knowledge and skill sufficient to use and maintain laboratory instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of related disciplines to integrate and correlate test results with other laboratory data and clinical information.
  • Must be able to produce reliable quality laboratory results under stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to perform CPR and update certification as needed.
  • Must be able to hear pages, bells, and phone system.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for long periods of time (possibly four to seven hours at a time).
  • Must be able to lift moderate to heavy items (20-50 lbs.).
  • Excellent visual, verbal, written, and typed communications required.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage numerous tasks at one time.
  • Responsible for understanding and performing work as a Technologist/Technician as outlined in the Lab Technologist/Technician job description.
  • Must provide the highest quality medical care and professionalism.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Employee must be a High School graduate (or equivalent)

Responsibilities

  • Monitoring test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable analytic performance and reporting concerns.
  • Ensuring remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Assuring proficiency testing is performed within the appropriate timeframe.
  • Assisting Physicians, Extenders, and Nurses with patient treatment and care, including vital signs, triaging, and patient preparation.
  • Handling requests from Physicians, Extenders, and Nurses respectfully and in a timely manner.
  • Supervising all lab personnel to ensure responsibilities are met, work meets quality standards, and policies/regulations are followed.
  • Ensuring patient test results are not reported unless test systems are functioning properly and reporting any issues.
  • Submitting monthly staffing schedules and approving payroll for lab personnel.
  • Providing lab orientation and in-service training to all testing personnel.
  • Assisting in interviewing lab candidates.
  • Assisting in on-site training of lab personnel and functioning as an administrator.
  • Working as a Lab Technologist/Technician at least two days per week.
  • Evaluating and documenting the competency of all testing personnel.
  • Evaluating all lab personnel at 6 and 12 months the first year of employment and annually or as needed thereafter.
  • Assisting lab personnel in person or by telephone to resolve technical problems.
  • Maintaining records of laboratory tests for two years.
  • Implementing safety regulations.
  • Reviewing lab inventory data and notifying the DMS when adjustments are needed.
  • Ensuring lab personnel understand all new and revised policies and procedures.
  • Working with fellow employees and externs during on-the-job training.
  • Ensuring all Charge Change and Courtesy write-offs are forwarded daily to the Administrative Services department.
  • Demonstrating proficiency in using the medical record system.
  • Maintaining a clean work area by performing biological cleanup in accordance with OSHA Guidelines.
  • Receiving and storing ordered supplies.
  • Being available as needed, as breaks and mealtimes may be interrupted at any time for patient care and to maintain center operations.
  • Attending staff meetings as directed.
  • Fostering teamwork in a positive and professional atmosphere.
  • Willing to work at any center due to staffing, a center emergency, or a reduction of work.
  • Operating, maintaining, and using medical and office equipment as trained.
  • Completing other duties as directed.
