About The Position

We are seeking a highly motivated Junior Mechanical/Electromechanical Engineer to support advanced research and development efforts with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in Adelphi, MD . This position is designed for early career engineers who thrive at the intersection of mechanical design, electronics, and light software development, and who are excited to build, test, and iterate on cutting edge prototypes. You will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team where mechanical engineers work hand in hand with electrical engineers, computer scientists, and system designers. Our programs emphasize rapid learning, hands-on experimentation, and solving real technical challenges that directly support national defense. You will design hardware, integrate sensors, build prototypes, run tests, and analyze data. In this role you will collaborate with a diverse engineering team to create end-to-end solutions, and you will gain broad exposure to robotics, electromechanical systems, materials, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) workflows, and field experimentation techniques. Requirements

  • 0 years’ experience with Bachelors in related field.
  • 1–2 years of relevant engineering experience and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a security clearance
  • Experience with Microsoft Office 365.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and adapt to new tools and technologies.
  • At least one year of hands-on experience using SolidWorks.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of experience designing electromechanical systems in lab, research, or industrial settings.
  • Strong hands-on prototyping skills; comfortable with tools, fast iteration, and creative problem solving.
  • Experience with fabrication technologies such as 3D printing, machining, laser cutting, or rapid prototyping.
  • Ability to assemble mechanical and electrical components into functional prototypes and conduct structured system tests.
  • Working knowledge of Python or C++ for data handling, automation, or test analysis.
  • Prior exposure to Robot Operating System (ROS) or robotic subsystems.
  • Ability to design and test simple circuits, wiring harnesses, and sensor interface boards with supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Develop high fidelity 3D CAD models, assemblies, and drawings using SolidWorks, including electronics housings, precision fixtures, and custom mechanical components.
  • Build, integrate, and refine prototype electromechanical systems, working directly with researchers and technicians.
  • Apply foundational electronics knowledge to support sensor integration, simple circuitry, embedded modules, and system interconnects.
  • Assist with test execution, troubleshooting, and iterative improvement of hardware.
  • Use Python or C++ to analyze test data, automate simple workflows, and support algorithm evaluation when needed.
  • Document designs, test results, and engineering decisions clearly using Microsoft Office tools.
