About The Position

This position is flexibly staffed and may be filled at the Investigator 1, Investigator 2, or Investigator 3 level, depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. Work progresses from routine investigations performed with close supervision at the Investigator 1 level, to independent journey-level work at Investigator 2, and to unusual, difficult, or exceptionally complex investigations at Investigator 3. Investigate reports of employers operating without required workers’ compensation insurance and allegations of workers’ compensation fraud using interviews, records research, databases, and field work. Analyze payroll, insurance, employment, business, financial, medical, and other records to determine compliance, identify violations, and develop evidence. Prepare investigative reports, petitions, discovery requests, subpoenas, hearing materials, exhibits, and other documentation, and provide factual testimony regarding investigations personally conducted. Work with employers, employees, witnesses, insurers, attorneys, and Local, State, and Federal partners to obtain information, coordinate investigative activity, and support appropriate enforcement action. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) enforces compliance with the Alaska Workers’ Compensation Act through thorough and fair fraud investigations, accountability for violations, and proactive public education intended to prevent uninsured injuries. This position directly supports the Division’s responsibility to promote compliance and protect Alaska workers and employers.

  • Any combination of preparatory post-secondary education and/or progressively responsible investigative work experience performing duties such as locating and gathering information, evidence and/or testimony to be used in civil or criminal proceedings, administrative actions, or governmentally regulated activities which included preparing reports in support of attorneys or agencies engaged in administrative adjudication, and/or detecting and verify suspected fraud, licensing violations, and other violations of state law.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must pass a background investigation, which includes a criminal record check for conviction of felony or misdemeanor crimes.
  • Must be eligible for commission as a Special Officer with the State of Alaska.
