About The Position

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Central Region Design & Engineering Services, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex to help us Keep Alaska Moving! This position will assist Right-of-Way (ROW) Engineering staff efforts in making determinations regarding existing highway rights of way based on public land orders, departmental orders, executive orders, and historical records. The role will oversee the design, engineering and development of right of way plans, parcel maps, and legal descriptions. Additionally, the position will coordinate and manage multiple diverse tasks with competing schedules involving design, construction, maintenance, public information, ROW acquisition, and administration of Consultant ROW mapping contracts.

Requirements

A valid Driver's License is required.
Engineering Assistant 1: Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution accredited by ABET. Or: A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET. AND An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.
Engineering Assistant 2: Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET. AND One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere. Or: A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET. AND An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination. AND One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere. Or: Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.
Engineering Assistant 3: Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET. AND Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere. Or: A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET. AND An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. AND Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods used in the measurement or determination of land boundaries, distances, elevations, areas, angles, and other features of the earth’s surface.
Knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, legal practices and documents, Government regulations, Executive orders, agency rules, Government organization and functions, and the democratic political process.
Uses a logical, systematic, and sequential approach to address problems or opportunities or manage a situation by drawing on one’s knowledge and experience base and calling on other references and resources as necessary.
Knowledge of the scientific principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.

Nice To Haves

An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply.
Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1.
Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.
Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).
