About The Position

Ayar Labs is seeking a motivated PhD graduate intern to work on integrated semiconductor lasers, focusing on device modeling and characterization. The intern will develop laser models to understand and optimize performance limits of advanced laser design configurations integrated onto different material platforms. They will test state-of-the-art lasers and analyze measurements to extract key parameters that inform design improvements for high-performance integrated laser systems. Projects will be tailored to the intern’s experience and interests, with mentorship from Ayar Labs scientists and engineers. The work contributes to semiconductor laser development for optical I/O.

The position is on-site at the San Jose office and runs from May to August 2027. No immigration support is available except for F-1 status, and relocation support is not provided. Pay is $50–$60 per hour, depending on education level.

Requirements

• Actively pursuing a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics/Photonics, Applied Physics, or an equivalent field.
• Strong programming skills in Python with the scientific stack, including NumPy, pandas, and matplotlib.
• Familiarity with semiconductor laser physics and optoelectronic device characterization, including LIV and optical spectra.
• Ability to work collaboratively and independently, manage time effectively, and take projects to completion.
