About The Position

Metropolitan Family Services (MFS) is seeking a part-time Intern to join their Midway Adult Protective Services team for the Fall 2026 semester. MFS is dedicated to empowering families to learn, earn, heal, and thrive, with a strong emphasis on community in both its internal culture and external services. This internship offers an opportunity to make a significant impact on individuals and families in need.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's level social work or related program (administrative, human services, psychology, etc.) at an accredited college or university.
Demonstrated ability to render adequate service to clients and to organize and manage jobs efficiently.
Requires mobility to work with a community-based caseload.
Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
Satisfactorily pass all relevant screening and criminal background checks.

Responsibilities

Provide client-centered, welcoming, responsive, and helpful intake and referral services to individuals and families, connecting them to appropriate services and resources.
Gather and process pertinent information to provide referrals for services and resources, and work with community resources to expand external referrals.
Triage and de-escalate individuals in crisis who are seeking services and/or resources.
Work effectively with diverse staff and service populations.
File reports for abuse, neglect, exploitation, abandonment, and/or self-neglect.
Learn and support comprehensive client assessments.
Learn and support the development of written service plans with clients, specifying goals and services.
Learn and support advocacy, case management, and supportive counseling for individuals, families, and groups.
Utilize expanded knowledge of resources to help clients, and work collaboratively with community resources.
Work within contract, grant, and program requirements, including meeting timelines and reporting requirements.
Collaborate and participate with other program staff in planning and implementing service plans.
Identify system issues and report them to the Program Director.
Take increasing responsibility for professional development, utilizing supervision and developmental opportunities.
Assist in emergency and crisis situations, which may include appropriate use of financial assistance and engagement of first responders.
Cover the APS Intake Line and the APS Afterhours Line on a rotating basis, taking intakes, addressing inquiries, and providing referrals.
Provide community outreach activities to raise awareness of the APS program.
Other duties as assigned.
