About The Position

Metropolitan Family Services (MFS) is seeking a part-time Intern to join their Midway Adult Protective Services team for the Fall 2026 semester. MFS is Illinois' first comprehensive human services agency, dedicated to empowering families to learn, earn, heal, and thrive. This internship offers an opportunity to make a significant impact on individuals and families within the community.

Requirements

Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's level social work or related program (administrative, human services, psychology, etc.) at an accredited college or university.
Demonstrated ability to render adequate service to clients.
Demonstrated ability to organize and manage jobs efficiently.
Requires mobility to work with a community-based caseload.
Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
Satisfactorily pass all relevant screening and criminal background checks.
Ability to reach the Midway site is required.

Responsibilities

Provide client-centered, welcoming, responsive, and helpful intake and referral services to individuals and families, connecting them to appropriate services and resources.
Gather and process pertinent information to provide referrals for services and resources.
Work with community resources to expand needed external referrals.
Triage and de-escalate individuals in crisis seeking services or resources.
Work effectively with diverse staff and service populations.
File reports for abuse, neglect, exploitation, abandonment, and/or self-neglect.
Learn and support with comprehensive client assessments.
Learn and support with written service plans, specifying goals and services.
Learn and support with advocacy, case management, and supportive counseling.
Learn to utilize expanded knowledge of resources and help clients use them.
Work collaboratively with community resources.
Work within contract, grant, and program requirements, including meeting timelines and reporting requirements.
Collaborate and participate with other program staff in planning and implementing service plans.
Learn to identify system issues and report them to the Program Director.
May work with community groups and carry a special community assignment.
Take increasing responsibility for professional development, utilizing supervision and other opportunities to enhance skills and understanding.
Assist in emergency and crisis situations, which may include appropriate use of financial assistance and engagement of first responders.
Cover the APS Intake Line and the APS Afterhours Line on a rotating basis, taking intakes, addressing inquiries, and providing referrals.
Provide community outreach activities to raise awareness of the APS program.
Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
