About The Position

Performs manual work of limited complexity utilizing manual and/or mechanized/power tools and/or equipment; may assist in the performance of semi-skilled or skilled tasks. This position is included in the Pittsburgh Joint Collective Bargaining Committee and will be filled in accordance with the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. This bid will serve as the required bid under Section 8 (E)(4) of the agreement between the City of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Joint Collective Bargaining Committee. This bid will also cover employees seeking a lateral transfer to a Laborer position in another department, and employees seeking a promotion or demotion to a Laborer position within their own department or to another department. Transfers, promotions, and/or demotions to Laborer vacancies shall be filled from the results of this bid.

Requirements

Currently employed by the City of Pittsburgh in a position covered by the Agreement between the City of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Joint Collective Bargaining Committee and remain employed in a position covered by the Agreement.

Responsibilities

Participates in various projects or tasks requiring physical labor (e.g., street resurfacing, digging ditches, pruning shrubs, installing playground equipment, maintaining pipelines, valves, hydrants, and manholes).
Cleans streets, gutters, sewers, and catch basins.
Loads and unloads materials, supplies, equipment, trash, and other debris; salts streets and sidewalks and removes snow.
Assists crafts persons in moving materials, setting forms, mixing cement, etc.; performs minor repairs on playgrounds, streets, sidewalks, stairs, sewers, etc.
Performs simple construction jobs (e.g., barricades, fences, etc.).
Cuts grass and weeds, rakes leaves, and performs related groundskeeping tasks.
Cleans buildings, offices, and the surrounding grounds.
Uses a variety of hand and power tools and pumps, sewer rodders, power movers, etc.
May operate fueling stations.
May drive trucks of one ton or less in daily routine.
May assist in locating mains and service lines and in backfilling excavations.
Performs routine maintenance of equipment (e.g., power saws, compressors, etc.).
Performs such other related tasks and duties that are assigned or required.
