About The Position

The Intake Registration Clerk interviews incoming patients or their representatives and prepares registration forms for signature. This role verifies insurance eligibility, benefits, authorization for services, and other pertinent registration information, and processes charges into the computer system for services rendered. The position also encompasses the functions of cashier, telephone operator, and health information clerk.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Mathematical ability required to review statistical data on various financial records.
  • 10 key adding machine, typing experience, and computer friendliness is required.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed.
  • Knowledge of filing systems and copy machines.

Nice To Haves

  • Three years of experience in a patient registration environment (preferably hospital).
  • Knowledge of medical terminology is preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred (Spanish/English).

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and verifies accurate registration data, including social, financial, and personal data from the patient or representatives, and insurance forms, copies of insurance cards and/or patient identification.
  • Manages the registration process, determining service needs, obtaining necessary signatures, explaining clinic policies, and obtaining signed MSP forms for Medicare patients.
  • Secures proper authorizations prior to services being rendered and takes appropriate action.
  • Documents account activity and financial status in notes.
  • Performs basic Health Information functions when paper charts are in use, including assembling charts, creating filing charts, creating medical record deficiency slips, and maintaining the filing system.
  • Ensures confidentiality and security of patient health information, provides feedback on the admission and billing process, obtains authorization for release of records, and assembles nightly documentation for the HIM department.
  • Performs general clerical functions, including answering telephone calls efficiently and politely, and typing and compiling necessary reports.
  • Responsible for filing/scanning lab and ancillary reports, completed charts, and incomplete charts, maintaining filing systems for accuracy and completeness.
  • Performs financial functions such as balancing cash drawers, accepting payments, and generating receipts.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of Admission Policies and Procedures and utilizes the HIS Affinity system.
  • Promotes positive patient/interfacility relations and a caring environment.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients, services rendered, and financial or demographic information.
  • Cross-trains to perform functions in other outpatient departments.
