About The Position

The Instructional Assistant - Reading supports reading instruction at J.P. Ryon Elementary School. The assistant collaborates with the Reading Resource Teacher on instructional planning and delivery, prepares and provides reading interventions for individuals or small groups as directed, and monitors and records student progress. The role also includes coordinating with classroom and reading teachers, maintaining a safe and orderly environment, providing substitute coverage as needed, and performing related duties assigned by the principal.

This is a 10-month, non-exempt position. The posting lists the salary scale as AFSCME UA3 Grade 5–7.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• At least 48 college credits or passing scores on the ParaPro assessment.
• Experience working with children.
• Ability to work in an instructional support role with high school- or middle-school-aged children.
• Excellent human relations skills.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Knowledge of children's developmental stages.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to plan developmentally appropriate activities as directed by the literacy teacher.
• For work in middle and high schools, be at least 18 years old and have been out of high school for at least two years.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Reading Resource Teacher on instructional planning and delivery.
• Prepare reading interventions and monitor and record student progress.
• Provide interventions to individual students and/or small groups as determined by the Reading Resource Teacher.
• Collaborate with classroom and reading teachers to discuss student progress.
• Maintain a safe and orderly environment.
• Maintain regular, on-time attendance.
• Perform related duties as assigned by the principal.
• Provide substitute coverage as needed.
