About The Position

The Instructional Assistant - Reading supports reading instruction at J.P. Ryon Elementary School. The role collaborates with the Reading Resource Teacher on instructional planning and delivery, provides reading interventions to individuals or small groups as directed, and monitors and records student progress. The assistant also works with classroom and reading teachers to discuss student progress, helps maintain a safe and orderly environment, provides substitute coverage as needed, and performs related duties assigned by the principal.

This is a 10-month, non-exempt position. The listed salary scale is AFSCME UA3 Grade 5–7.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• 48 college credits or passing scores on the ParaPro assessment.
• Experience working with children.
• Ability to work in an instructional support role with high school- or middle-school-aged children.
• Excellent human relations skills.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Knowledge of the developmental stages of children.
• Good oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to plan developmentally appropriate activities as directed by the literacy teacher.
• Must be at least 18 years old and have been out of high school for at least 2 years to work in middle and high school.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with the Reading Resource Teacher for instructional planning and delivery.
• Prepares reading interventions and monitors and records student progress.
• Provides interventions to individuals and/or small groups of students as determined by the Reading Resource Teacher.
• Collaborates with the classroom teacher and reading teacher to discuss student progress.
• Maintains a safe and orderly environment.
• Maintains regular, on-time attendance.
• Provides substitute coverage as needed.
• Performs related duties as assigned by the principal.
