About The Position

Description of Duties Read and interpret structural building drawings, applicable building codes, contract specifications, applicable standards and shop structural drawings; verify compliance with the aforementioned contract documents; and communicate effectively with Contractors, engineers, architects, and project management staff. Documents daily progress of the work, prepare monthly progress payment request, track various changes, verify time and material work, measure and document job quantities. Documentation and information retrieval may require computer literacy skills. Deputy Building Inspectors must have the ability to set priorities, the ability to make decisions and work effectively with minimal supervision, the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with LAWA stakeholders, contractors, construction workers, the public and must conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times. Position Description Summary The Deputy Building Inspector will provide special inspection support for the LAWA Quality Assurance and Construction Inspection Division across multiple projects within LAWAs Capital Improvement Program. This role requires knowledge of multiple code requirements, effective communication, and time management. Candidates must possess valid Los Angeles City Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) Deputy Licenses in Concrete Construction, Spray-Applied Fireproofing, Drilled-in-Anchors/Seismic Resistance, and Steel Construction. Possession of other deputy licenses is preferred. Proof of Cal-OSHA 30-hr training within the last 4 years prior to assignment. Successful candidates must have LAWA SIDA badge prior to official start of work. Must be able to work any assigned shift - day, swing, or night - as required to meet the contractors construction schedule.

Requirements

  • Possess experience, knowledge, and understanding of methods used throughout construction.
  • Possess valid Los Angeles City Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) Deputy Licenses in the following disciplines: Concrete construction Steel construction Drilled-in anchors/seismic resistance Spray-applied fireproofing
  • Knowledge of Project Management Information Software used for inspection/document control (i.e. PM Web, Adobe Pro, Bluebeam, etc.).
  • Computer proficiency to review and utilize electronic equipment for contract documents efficiently, including change orders, submittals, RFIs, and other inspection documents, with minimal supervision.
  • 5 years or more of experience performing as a LADBS Deputy Building Inspector on large-scale projects. This includes overseeing and ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations on significant construction projects.
  • Involvement in complex projects that require coordination with multiple stakeholders, including contractors, engineers, and city officials.
  • Expertise in identifying and addressing code violations, ensuring that all aspects of construction meet the required standards.
  • High school diploma (or equivalent)
  • CAL OSHA-30 certification
  • Fall protection and harness training
  • Confined Space Entry Training
  • Valid Los Angeles City Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) license for the scope of work being inspected; have a thorough knowledge of building construction practices, and be experienced in one or more of the expertise areas listed below: Reinforced concrete Reinforced masonry Structural Steel and Welding Prestressed Concrete Controlled Activities: Sprayed Applied Fireproofing Drilled-in-Anchors Shotcrete Soils/Grading Seismic Resistance
  • 30-hour Cal-OSHA training prior to assignment. The 30-hour training will have been received within the last 4 years.

  • Possession of other deputy licenses is preferred.
  • Availability to work overtime as required to meet project deadlines and ensure timely completion of tasks is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain comprehensive daily inspection reports that capture the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and HOW of all construction work activities, while ensuring the reports are clear and concise to accurately reflect daily progress.
  • Assist in reviewing monthly progress payment requests when assigned to a program.
  • Track various changes, verify time and material work, measure, and document job quantities.
  • Conduct special inspections on various disciplines.
