About The Position

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a senior IT Specialist with responsibility for managing the base LAN/WAN including the planning, analysis, acquisition, design, development, implementation, quality assurance, configuration, installation, integration, maintenance testing, operational integrity, and/or management of networked systems.

  • Upon completion of your probationary/trial period, your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
  • The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • The employee must obtain and maintain a Top Secret clearance.
  • Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on a military or commercial aircraft.
  • Recall to duty and overtime may be a requirement of this position.
  • Physical may be required.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 35 pounds.
  • Information Assurance Certification is a condition of employment.
  • This position includes information assurance (IA) work as a paramount duty requirement.
  • Per DoD 8570.01-M, the incumbent of this position must achieve the appropriate IA certification within six months of assignment of these duties.
  • A waiver of this six month requirement may be granted per DoD 8570.01-M, C3.2.4.2 or C3.2.4.3.
  • Failure to receive the proper IA certification may result in removal from this position.
  • This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.
  • IT-related experience demonstrating each of the following four competencies: Attention to Detail, Customer Service, Oral Communication, Problem Solving
  • At least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-11) or equivalent in other pay systems.
  • Specialized experience includes: applying IT network systems design principles, methodologies, and approaches to the development, installation, operation, and maintenance of network services that support functional requirements; designing, developing, and integrating network systems consistent with the organization's existing or planned network infrastructures; installing and operating large/complex network programs and providing technical guidance on the designing, testing, operating, and maintaining of network programs; and analyzing functional IT network system requirements, developing supportable recommendations for enhancements, and applying a wide range of methodologies and tools.
  • Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-11 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-12 level.
  • TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks.
  • NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
  • Knowledge of a full range of network systems (LAN/WAN) design principles, methodologies, and approaches used in developing, testing, installing, operating, managing, and maintaining network services that support functional requirements.
  • Knowledge of the network architecture, interrelationships, operating modes, configuration, topology, and protocols typically found at base level.
  • Knowledge of network operating and maintenance concepts and methods to troubleshoot network problems.
  • Knowledge of complex configuration management techniques, and requirements appropriate to managing base level network systems.
  • Ability to gather facts and use effective analytical and evaluative methods to assess information, plan the sequence of actions necessary, make sound decisions, and solve a variety of network problems; and to analyze component interrelationships and evaluate network systems and computer applications from an operational perspective.
  • Ability to maintain an up-to-date awareness of technological advances and predict how management can meet future requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the base LAN/WAN systems, designs and monitors new complex network systems, configures and installs network hardware/software, and maintains LAN Operations.
  • Performs feasibility studies on complex information systems and conducts in-depth analyses complicated by novel problems.
  • Keeps abreast of emerging technology to predict future network needs.
  • Participates in management discussions, meetings, committees, or special projects.
