About The Position

This position supports the Fort Wayne Police Department Records Division by answering non-emergency calls, assisting citizens and law-enforcement personnel, and processing sensitive police records. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable handling confidential police information while assisting the public, and can remain composed in stressful situations.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in criminal justice or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least one year of experience in records, data-entry or administrative environment
  • Strong organization, communication and customer-service skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and make sound decisions under pressure
  • Ability to pass the City's post-offer screening process
  • Ability to obtain and maintain IDACS/NCIC certification, which authorizes access to Indiana and national law-enforcement information systems
  • Ability to complete the required training, pass the examination and recertify every two years
  • Valid Indiana driver's license
  • Accurate keyboarding and data-entry skills; a keyboarding test will be administered
  • Ability to learn Spillman, the Police Department's records and call-management system, along with other law-enforcement databases
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and standard office equipment
  • Ability to understand policies, legal terminology, maps, codes and detailed instructions

Responsibilities

  • Answer non-emergency calls, gather essential information and direct callers to the appropriate service
  • Enter police reports, citations, protective orders, stolen-property records, tow information and calls for service
  • Process background checks, criminal-history requests, handgun permit information and vehicle releases
  • Assist citizens, police personnel, towing providers and outside agencies by phone and in person
  • Review, enter and release law-enforcement information while maintaining strict confidentiality
