Immigration Lawyer – Department Supervisor

Cohen Immigration LawMontreal, QC
Hybrid

About The Position

Cohen Immigration Law has practiced exclusively in Canadian immigration for nearly 50 years. We're the legal team behind CanadaVisa.com — Canada's most-visited immigration site, reaching millions of visitors each month. We process thousands of cases per year across citizenship, express entry, work permits, family sponsorship, and criminal inadmissibility. We're in the middle of a meaningful transformation. We've built a real-time operations dashboard — what we call the Command Centre — that gives every department supervisor live visibility into their team's performance: client response times, pipeline velocity, file throughput, and client satisfaction. We're investing in AI-powered tools across the practice, and we're looking for lawyers who want to lead at the intersection of legal expertise and operational excellence. This isn't a traditional associate role. You'll own a department. You'll lead one of our immigration practice areas — managing a team of 3-5 case managers, owning the department's performance metrics, and ensuring every client receives fast, accurate, and professional service. You'll provide legal oversight on files, handle quality control, and step in on complex matters that require attorney judgment. But your primary job is leadership: making sure your team is performing, your pipeline is healthy, and your clients are happy. You'll have a dashboard showing your department's numbers in real time. You'll run daily standups with your team. You'll be responsible for hiring and training your own CMs. And you'll report directly to the CEO on your department's performance.

Requirements

  • A licensed lawyer. Member in good standing of the Barreau du Québec or the Law Society of Ontario.
  • A leader. You've managed, mentored, or supervised junior staff before. You're energized by developing people, not just reviewing their work. You can run a meeting, deliver feedback, and make decisions under pressure.
  • Operationally minded. You think in systems, not just cases. When something is inefficient, it bothers you — and you fix it. You're comfortable with data, dashboards, and using numbers to drive decisions.
  • A strong communicator. You can explain complex legal concepts to a nervous first-time client and make them feel confident in minutes. Your written communication is polished and professional.
  • AI-curious. You've used tools like ChatGPT or Claude and you've thought about what they mean for legal practice. You see AI as a tool that makes you more effective, not a threat to your profession.

Nice To Haves

  • Immigration experience is preferred but not required. If you have strong legal instincts and leadership ability, we'll train you on the domain. We're building an environment where lawyers collaborate with engineers to continuously improve how immigration services are delivered — that mindset matters more than years of immigration experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a department of 3-5 case managers — set targets, run standups, coach your team, and hold them accountable to clear performance standards
  • Own your department's metrics: client response time, pipeline velocity, and client satisfaction scores
  • Provide legal oversight and quality control on all files before government submission
  • Handle complex legal matters — procedural fairness letters, government requests for additional documentation, cases requiring legal research or strategic judgment
  • Hire and train new case managers as the department grows — develop onboarding materials, run training, and build a team that can operate independently
  • Collaborate with our product and engineering team to improve processes — identify bottlenecks, suggest automations, and help shape the tools your team uses every day
  • Convert leads into clients — assess eligibility during consultations, explain options clearly, and guide prospective clients toward the right service

Benefits

  • Competitive base compensation plus performance bonus tied to department metrics
  • Hybrid work (Montreal or Toronto)
  • Group benefits including extended health care, telehealth, dental, vision, and paid time off
  • Real ownership — this isn't a role where you review files and go home. You own a department, you see your numbers, and you have the authority to make it better
  • A front-row seat to the transformation of legal services — you'll work alongside a product and engineering team that's actively building the future of immigration law
  • Career growth — as the firm scales, department supervisors are the natural candidates for senior leadership roles
