About The Position

This role identifies, analyzes, and resolves problems within Radiology reading rooms, ensuring all patient images and information are available for physician review. The specialist will utilize applications like PowerShare and Life Image to integrate patient images into the Radiology PACS system, manage reading room protocols, and cover phones and physician requests. The position also involves overseeing radiology quality assurance activities, ensuring studies are readily available on PACS, and managing record-keeping to ensure complete and accurate documentation in compliance with HIPAA and departmental policies. Additionally, the role coordinates equipment service needs, assists with training residents, and ensures technology supports optimal diagnostic information and throughput. The specialist will also maintain inventory, develop cost containment programs, and provide preliminary reports to physicians. Daily equipment checks and maintenance of powerscribe workstations are required, along with managing reports in batch queues and correcting status on error log reports. The role utilizes the Picture Archiving System for image retrieval, distribution, CD creation, film digitization, and film printing, as well as for auditing patient data. Verification of completed procedures in the Radiology Information System, checking exam status for final reports, merging patient data for duplicates, verifying schedules, and tracking patients are key responsibilities. The specialist will also assist technologists with data management and gather data for patients outside Emory Healthcare. Regular communication with physicians regarding operational changes, seeking input for improvements, and communicating potential issues to management are expected. The role coordinates workflow and image transfers with other facilities, assists physicians with image interpretation and documentation, and evaluates data from outside sources for effective transfer.

Requirements

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Three years of experience in radiology department or related healthcare experience preferred.
• Knowledge of radiology department workflow and various imaging modalities preferred.
• Familiarity with specific radiology information applications.
• Basic computer knowledge (ability to use a keyboard, mouse, and video display terminal to receive, retrieve, and/or audit information and data).
• Good written/oral and analytical skills required.

Responsibilities

• Identifies, analyzes, and resolves problems within Radiology reading rooms.
• Ensures all patient images and information are available for physician review.
• Utilizes PowerShare and Life Image applications to integrate patient images into the Radiology PACS system.
• Covers phones and handles physician requests for all modality reading rooms.
• Manages Radiology reading room protocols.
• Assists in contacting requesting physicians, obtaining information from Powerchart, utilizing PACS for prior studies, checking RIS for prior reports, and ensuring report documentation.
• Oversees and coordinates radiology quality assurance activities governed by the ACR.
• Ensures studies are readily available on PACS for physicians.
• Burns images to CD.
• Assists with med school lectures by finding articles on the internet for physicians.
• Prints out reports for physicians for conference.
• Directs record-keeping activities by interpreting applicable regulations and establishing filing and auditing procedures.
• Remains knowledgeable in regards to HIPAA and departmental policies, and ensures compliance with requirements.
• Coordinates equipment service needs utilizing 8-help.
• Assists with training of residents on new equipment and applications.
• Ensures activities do not disrupt patient services.
• Works with IS to ensure data systems and programs adequately support QA activities.
• Ensures technology provides optimal diagnostic information and throughput.
• Maintains inventory within the department.
• Develops, implements, and evaluates cost containment programs of consumable supplies and equipment.
• Utilizes applications to provide requesting physicians with a preliminary report and associate and correct reports on patients.
• Performs daily equipment check and maintenance of powerscribe workstation.
• Places reports in a batch queue for dictation and corrects status on error log reports.
• Utilizes the Picture Archiving System for image retrieval, distribution, CD creation, film digitization, and film printing.
• Audits patient information/data using the Picture Archiving System.
• Verifies patient procedures are completed in the Radiology Information System.
• Checks exam status to ensure final report.
• Merges patient data in regards to duplicate patients.
• Verifies patient schedules and tracks patients.
• Assists technologists with data management regarding accession numbers on patients.
• Gathers data for patients done outside of Emory Healthcare Systems.
• Regularly meets with and communicates operational changes to physicians.
• Seeks input and recommendations from physicians on ways to improve operations.
• Communicates potential issues and opportunities to management.
• Coordinates workflow and image transfers with other facilities.
• Assists physicians in providing image interpretation and documentation of studies.
• Evaluates data received from outside sources and coordinates effective transfer of information.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
