About The Position

This role identifies, analyzes, and resolves problems within Radiology reading rooms, ensuring all patient images and information are available for physician review. The specialist will utilize applications like PowerShare and Life Image to integrate patient images into the Radiology PACS system, manage reading room protocols, and handle physician requests. Key responsibilities include ensuring studies are readily available on PACS, coordinating quality assurance activities governed by the ACR, and maintaining compliance with HIPAA and departmental policies. The role also involves coordinating equipment service needs, assisting with training, managing inventory, developing cost containment programs, and ensuring technology supports optimal diagnostic information and throughput. Additionally, the specialist will verify patient procedures in the Radiology Information System, merge duplicate patient data, track patients, and gather data for external procedures. Regular communication with physicians regarding operational changes and seeking their input for improvements is essential. The role also coordinates workflow and image transfers with other facilities and assists physicians with image interpretation and documentation.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent.
Three years of experience in radiology department or related healthcare experience preferred.
Knowledge of radiology department workflow and various imaging modalities preferred.
Familiarity with specific radiology information applications.
Basic computer knowledge e.g. the ability to use a keyboard, mouse, and video display terminal to receive, retrieve and/or audit information and data.
Good written/oral and analytical skills required.

Responsibilities

Identifies, analyzes, and resolves problems within Radiology reading rooms.
Ensures all patient images and information are available for physician review.
Utilizes PowerShare and Life Image applications to integrate patient images into the Radiology PACS system.
Covers phones and handles physician requests for all modality reading rooms.
Manages Radiology reading room protocols.
Assists in contacting requesting physicians, obtaining information from Powerchart, utilizing PACS for prior studies, checking the RIS for prior reports, and ensuring report documentation for patients.
Oversees and coordinates radiology quality assurance activities governed by the ACR, by establishing quality measures and standards, monitoring departmental performance, and ensuring physicians are reminded of compliance.
Ensures studies are readily available on PACS for physicians.
Burns images to CD.
Assists with med school lectures by finding articles on the internet for physicians.
Prints out reports for physicians for conference.
Directs record-keeping activities by interpreting applicable regulations and establishing filing and auditing procedures.
Remains knowledgeable in regards to HIPAA and departmental policies, and ensures compliance with requirements.
Coordinates equipment service needs utilizing 8-help.
Assists with training of residents on new equipment and applications.
Ensures activities do not disrupt patient services.
Works with IS to ensure data systems and programs adequately support QA activities.
Ensures technology provides optimal diagnostic information and throughput.
Maintains inventory within the department to ensure supplies are available and resources are used appropriately and efficiently.
Develops, implements, and evaluates cost containment programs of consumable supplies and equipment.
Utilizes applications to provide requesting physicians with a preliminary report and associate and correct reports on patients.
Performs daily equipment check and maintenance of powerscribe workstation.
Places reports in a batch queue for dictation and corrects status on error log reports.
Utilizes the picture archiving system for image retrieval, distribution, CD creation, film digitization, and film printing.
Audits patient information/data using the electronic database.
Verifies patient procedures are completed in the Radiology Information System.
Checks exam status to ensure final report.
Merges patient data in regards to duplicate patients.
Verifies patient schedules and tracks patients.
Assists technologists with data management regarding accession numbers on patients.
Gathers data for patients done outside of Emory Healthcare Systems.
Regularly meets with and communicates operational changes to physicians.
Seeks input and recommendations from physicians on ways to improve operations.
Communicates potential issues and opportunities to management.
Coordinates workflow and image transfers with other facilities.
Assists physicians in providing image interpretation and documentation of studies.
Evaluates data received from outside sources and coordinates effective transfer of information.
Performs other duties as assigned.
